Job Description


To coordinate the delivery of individual educational programs to identified children.

Special Education Coordinator or Director

Qualifications: * State of Alaska Type A Teacher Certification with a Special Education Endorsement required

  • Currently hold or willing to obtain a Type B Alaska Administrator Certificate
  • Administrative experience preferred
  • Able to manage the complaint/hearing process
  • Able to work with and keep parents informed
  • Minimum Five years of successful experience as a special education teacher preferred
  • Experience with personnel (Aide) management preferred
  • Experience serving children of varied ethnic, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills with students, staff, parents, district and community
  • Demonstrated skills as a team builder, collaborator, mediator and facilitator
  • Commitment to the professional learning and development of staff
  • Broad background in education or special education, with teaching experience in at least one area of handicap
Under the direction of the Superintendent, the performance responsibilities of the Special Education Coordinator of Director:
1. Establishes and maintains special classes and services for disabled students.
2. Prepares all financial and program reports required by the state department of education.
3. Plans and administers the budget to provide special education services.
4. Assists in the recruitment, selection, placement, and evaluation of special education personnel.
5. Determines the needs for new programs and services.
6. Develops and promotes suitable procedures for screening and diagnosis of student programs.
7. Coordinates procedures for eligibility placement, transfer, and termination of students in special education programs.
8. Develops in-service training programs for special education staff.
9. Coordinated supervision with site administration of all special education personnel.
10. Obtains, schedules and assigns specialistists, including psychologist, physical, occupational, and speech therapists.
11. Assigns personnel in the supplementary programs.
12. Plans for and supervises a system of record keeping and file maintenance.
13. Identifies required supplies and equipment for special education programs.
14. Evaluates the effectiveness of existing programs and revises as needed.
15. Interprets the program to school personnel, parents, and the community at large.
16. Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development.
17. Provides direct services to select students throughout District as needed.
18. Provides direct services to select students at schools outside of Tok.
18. Serves as district representative and child find coordinator.
19. Is a contributing member of the district leadership
20. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Reasoning Ability: Ability to reason, communicate effectively, remember, solve practical problems and be able to deal with a variety of concrete and abstract variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret and follow instructions furnished in written, digital, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties, the employee is required to sit, stand and walk about the classroom, and school facility, the employee may occasionally need to push equipment carts or lift boxes up to 40 lbs. The employee must be able to use their hands to finger or feel objects, tools, controls, and to be able to reach with hands and arms. They will occasionally be required to climb or balance. The employee must be able to speak, hear, and see well enough to perform job responsibilities without reliance on the assistance of another individual. The specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus, see at a distance, have peripheral vision and depth perception.
