General Description:
The Director of Development provides strategic leadership and direction for all fundraising and donor engagement efforts. This role is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive development strategy to sustain and grow philanthropic revenue through individual, corporate, foundation, and community giving.
The Director will cultivate and steward meaningful donor relationships, manage major gifts, and oversee campaigns and events. The ideal candidate is both a strategic thinker and a hands-on leader, able to balance relationship management, planning, and execution to advance the organization's mission and impact.
Primary Objectives of The Job:
Strategic Leadership & Planning
Design and implement a multi-year development strategy aligned with organizational goals.
Establish and monitor annual revenue targets; report progress to the Executive Director and Board.
Collaborate with senior leadership to integrate fundraising goals into programmatic and organizational planning.
Identify opportunities to diversify revenue streams, including planned giving, corporate sponsorships, endowments, and partnerships.
Support and engage the Board and Development Committee in fundraising, training, and relationship building.
Donor Relations & Fundraising
Build and manage a portfolio of major donors and prospects through cultivation and stewardship.
Partner with the Executive Director to solicit major gifts and institutional support.
Oversee donor communications, acknowledgments, and engagement strategies that strengthen long-term relationships.
Represent the organization externally at donor meetings, events, and community gatherings.
Ensure accurate tracking of all donor interactions and gifts in the CRM system.
Collaborate with staff to maintain a culture of philanthropy across the organization.
Foundation & Corporate Relations
Lead strategy for grants and institutional giving; ensure proposals and reports align with organizational priorities.
Cultivate and maintain relationships with foundation program officers and corporate partners.
Develop sponsorship packages and partnership proposals that align with partner goals and organizational mission.
Collaborate with Marketing and Program teams to design partnership activations and impact storytelling.
Team Leadership & Operations
Supervise and mentor development staff, providing coaching and professional growth opportunities.
Establish clear systems, processes, and performance metrics for development operations.
Partner with finance staff to ensure accurate reconciliation of development income and reporting.
Manage the development budget to optimize resource use and ROI on fundraising activities.
Communications & Events
Collaborate with communications staff on messaging, storytelling, and donor materials.
Provide leadership for annual fundraising events and campaigns, ensuring alignment with overall strategy.
Oversee event budgets, logistics, vendor relationships, and post-event evaluations for impact and efficiency.
Support staff and committees in identifying creative event concepts that engage donors, partners, and the community.
Collaborate with the Executive Director to hire and manage outside consultants, as may be needed, in the area of communications, marketing, grant writing, and event planning
Experience Needed/Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Nonprofit Management, Fundraising, Philanthropy or closely related field, or equivalent professional experience but not required
Minimum five years of experience in nonprofit development/fundraising
Exceptional written and verbal communication
Previous experience successfully communicating and actively engaging with board members, individual donors, private and public funders, and corporate organizations
Experience supervising entry level staff and working collaboratively across administrative and programmatic positions and teams
Strong fundraising experience with the ability to engage and build relationships with a wide range of investors, donors and cultures
Experience with planning, coordinating and executing fundraising events
Self-directed and goal driven to initiate donor visits and fundraising calls
Experience with Donor Perfect or similar donor management platforms including email creation templates and donor tracking
Understanding of and ability to regularly access reporting and utilize research
Experience in business networking and partnership development
Effective time management is essential along with the ability to multitask
Willingness to work occasional evening and weekend commitments for events or donor engagements.
