Position Summary:

This position has the opportunity to lead a team of highly qualified and hard-working custodial services staff, supporting 250 facilities, 9.2 million square feet, and a high level of campus stewardship. The role supports over 430 custodians reporting to 19 managers throughout campus. The successful candidate will need to be a strong advocate for our staff who possesses a continuous improvement mindset, seeking areas to grow and challenge their team.

The Director of Building Care joins a group of experienced leaders in facilities management roles across grounds and maintenance operations. They will need to establish positive relationships, work collaboratively across colleges and units, and develop strategic initiatives while maintaining effective customer service.

The Director is the leader of the Building Care Department, a key staff advisor to senior facilities executives, and has responsibility for leading approximately 450 professional and unionized staff employees in custodial operations for the Cornell University Ithaca campus.

With general guidance from the Associate Vice President, the Director is independently and comprehensively responsible for the management of operations involving 3 zones comprised of 19 individual custodial operational teams. Each zone is supervised by an Associate Director and is comprised of 120-150 custodians who report into separate time clock areas. Cumulatively, the Director oversees operations involving the cleaning activities, event support, emergency response, and care of 250 buildings, totaling 9.2 million square feet of space, 19 managers, and over 430 custodians.

Key responsibilities include acting as an advocate and visionary for the quality stewardship of all aspects of the custodial operations, sound financial planning and management of the Building Care Department, effective management of Building Care human resources and organizational management plans which emphasize a safe working environment and sound management practices, working collaboratively with FCS and campus and external stakeholders, while establishing and maintaining effective customer relationships. Develops and implements strategic initiatives that support efficiencies for workflow and staffing needs.

Remains on-call 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, for emergencies and other special needs that occur outside normal working hours.

We Require These Qualifications:

A bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with at least 7 years of experience in facilities management and at least 5 years of supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Strong leadership skills with demonstrated ability to lead a large, diverse workforce.

Individual must have an overall understanding of general cleaning maintenance techniques, business acumen (which includes familiarity with budgets, financial reporting, and forecasting), and developed maturity in decision process and interaction with people in a team environment.

Ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders.

Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.

Must possess superior conflict resolution skills and demonstrated experience coaching and leading a management team.

Working knowledge of APPA cleaning standardization, frequencies, and levels.
