Gannett is seeking a highly experienced and visionary Director, Data Science to lead our data-driven initiatives and maximize the value of our data assets. As the Director, Data Science, you will be responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of data science strategies, managing a team of data scientists, and collaborating closely with cross-functional stakeholders to drive data insights and innovation. This is a strategic leadership role that requires a deep understanding of data science methodologies, exceptional analytical skills, and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into actionable business strategies.

The Director, Data Science is tasked with consistently identifying and monitoring key business risks and realizing the data needs of the business. You will manage a team of data scientists who have both technical savvy and the ability to understand how their work drives business results. You will lead the process to further intensify our focus on data science - using it to analyze our past performance as well as build a data science and modeling engine that will help us predict the future.

What you\'ll do:

Leadership and Strategy:

  • Develop and articulate a comprehensive data science strategy aligned with the company\'s goals and objectives.
  • Provide visionary leadership, establish priorities, and set clear goals for the data science team.
  • Collaborate with executive management to define data science initiatives that drive business growth and competitive advantage.
Team Management:
  • Build and lead a high-performing data science team, including hiring, training, mentoring, and performance management.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning within the data science team.
  • Encourage the use of best practices, effective methodologies, and advanced analytical techniques.
Data Science Project Management:
  • Oversee the end-to-end execution of data science projects, ensuring adherence to timelines, quality standards, and budget constraints.
  • Define project scope, deliverables, and success metrics in collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Develop data solutions to address business pain points
  • Monitor project progress, identify risks, and provide timely solutions to ensure successful project completion.
  • Maintain and enhance current models, tools and data sources to deliver increasingly valuable, repeatable and scalable analytic solutions
Data Insights and Innovation:
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to identify business challenges and opportunities that can be addressed through data analysis and modeling.
  • Lead the exploration and evaluation of emerging data science technologies and methodologies to drive innovation and enhance data capabilities.
  • Translate complex data insights into actionable recommendations for business stakeholders and executive leadership.
Data Governance and Compliance:
  • Establish and enforce data governance policies, standards, and best practices to ensure data quality, integrity, and privacy.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and industry standards related to data management and protection.
Who you are:
  • Prefer 10+ years of relevant experience in data analytics and at 5+ years of managing a team of data analysts and/or data scientists
  • Communicator: You can communicate complex ideas clearly to technical and non-technical audiences alike. Your team knows their priorities and you manage expectations with your broader cross-functional stakeholder network and leadership team
  • Technical: Hands-on experience with data science, model development through deployment, and subsequent monitoring. You have experience prototyping, implementing, and maintaining data science solutions in a large enterprise.
  • Bachelors/master\'s degree in Statistics, Machine Learning, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, or any other related quantitative field. Work experience of the same is also expected.
  • Proven and successful experience track record of leading high-performing data science teams leading through the successful performance of advanced quantitative analyses and statistical modeling that positively impact business performance.
  • The candidate for this position will have to be highly proficient and experienced in scripting languages and have rapid prototyping skills, that is, fluency in Python or R and SQL, Google cloud and open source (for example, scikit learn, tensorflow, torch). Experience in an advertising-based business is a plus.
