Compensation

Pay range for new hires: $105,000 - $170,000

Job Overview:

The Director for Behavioral Health Services is responsible for overall development, operations and strategy implementation related to behavioral health services for all AVH facilities patients (OP, IP, ED). Coordinates care of behavioral health patients with staff, contractors. Develops innovative relationships with community and regional partners to recognize links between mental health and other population health issues. Provides leadership with the aim of improving strategic partnerships, and opportunities that support building an integrated mental health system for Aspen Valley Hospital Acts as a liaison between AVH executive team and community leaders. Represents the CEO and CNO to develop short-term and long-range behavioral health plans with community partners. Also serves as primary point of contact for behavioral health communications, where applicable. Participates on internal and external committees where input is valuable (compliance, quality, patient safety, detox, mental health, etc.).

Quality clinical outcomes standards are determined jointly with Medical Staff and monitored for effectiveness. Administrative responsibilities include planning, organizing, leading controlling and coordinating the overall work of the professional and nonprofessional behavioral health personnel within the department on an as-needed basis. Responsibilities also include preparation of and accountability for annual operational and capital budget. Works integrally with the direct and indirect health care team members; facilitates all avenues of communication regarding behavioral health patients. Performs direct patient care when necessary. The Manager, Behavioral Health Services is expected to: model professional behavior to staff, physicians, patients, and visitors; display mutual respect and cultural competency; promote trust and excellence; effectively manage resources; and demonstrate responsibility for professional growth.

  • Clinical Program Development - Create and expand a system of care for patients with behavioral health needs. Work with internal (administration, staff) and external stakeholders (tele-psychiatry, community organizations, local government) to implement behavioral health strategies that optimize quality of care.
  • Program Management - Responsible for planning and overseeing behavioral health related initiatives, plans and programs. Plan and designate program resources, monitor progress and keep stakeholders informed by providing consistent updates about strategy, adjustments and progress.
  • Personnel Management - Manages department staffing, including recruitment, supervision, scheduling, orientation, development, evaluation, and disciplinary actions. Also includes management of contractual relationships with behavioral health providers. Maintains open communication with staff. Holds staff meetings as appropriate and keeps Administration informed of issues. Conducts annual performance appraisal of all staff in a timely fashion. Works with external contractors and staff to assure overall accessibility of behavioral health services is available system wide.
  • Fiscal Responsibility - Develop business case justifications and cost/benefit analyses for all responsible department spending and initiatives. Develop and review budgets and ensure they comply with stated goals, guidelines, and objectives. Ensures departments operate within the budgets approved. Submits variance reports within the required time frame. Works cooperatively with Patient Financial Services department to assure proper billing of patients. Provides administrative direction and coordination in the formulation and administration of relevant IGA agreements, BH related contracts and RFP\'s.
  • Regulatory & Accreditation Compliance - Develops and implements all departmental policies and procedures as necessary for the compliant functioning of the department, to include Medicare, Medicaid, Swing Bed, The Joint Commission, CMS standards (among others).
  • Staff Development - Ensure that staff members are aligned with department and organizational goals. Provide continued educational opportunities to support those goals.
  • Departmental Quality & Performance Improvement - Develop and implement strategies to continually improve quality and performance of the department as it relates to the mission and goals of the organization. Monitors quality improvement initiatives, keeps staff apprised of same, and creates plans for improvement where necessary. Actively participates in Clinical Quality. Develops and implements strategies to continually improve quality and performance related to social services. Develops programming to increase resources, improve access to care, and enhance the overall treatment experience. Provides oversight to ensure compliance and communication with the RAE regarding the implementation of Social Determinants of Health HTP initiative across hospital departments. Leads the implementation team for Zero Suicide, a quality assurance program, and oversees monitoring activities to meet associated standards and regulations.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
  • Master\'s Degree in Social Work, or a substantially similar field of study
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Colorado, or ability to obtain
  • BLS required
  • 7+ years of progressive management in an acute care hospital environment, including an extensive background in healthcare operations with specific involvement in quality and patient safety activities
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and administrative skills to deal effectively with all levels of hospital staff, the public, and agencies and entities involved in this area
