Position Summary



The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a vital role in supporting individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) to lead independent, fulfilling, and meaningful lives. Working in both home and community-based settings , the DSP provides hands-on assistance with daily living activities, fosters skill development, and promotes social inclusion and well-being.



This position requires empathy, patience, and a commitment to person-centered care. DSPs work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team to ensure that each individual receives consistent, respectful, and high-quality support tailored to their unique needs and goals.



Key Responsibilities



A. Assisting with Daily Living and Personal Care



Support individuals with bathing, grooming, dressing , and overall personal hygiene.



Assist with meal preparation, feeding , and maintaining balanced nutrition.



Provide medication reminders or assistance according to established care plans.



Offer support with toileting and hygiene , ensuring privacy and dignity at all times.



B. Promoting Independence and Skill Building



Encourage and assist individuals in developing life skills such as money management, shopping, cooking, and home maintenance.



Support independence in daily routines through guided practice and positive reinforcement .



Facilitate learning in social interaction, communication, and self-expression .



Promote community inclusion through participation in recreational, educational, and cultural activities.



C. Behavioral Support



Implement strategies from the individual's behavior support plan , promoting stability and positive coping mechanisms.



Observe and document behavioral patterns, providing input to the interdisciplinary team.



Offer emotional support and encouragement, helping individuals manage anxiety, frustration, or behavioral challenges.



D. Health and Safety Monitoring



Monitor and report any changes in physical health, emotional state, or behavior to the supervising Program Specialist.



Assist with mobility needs , including transfers, ambulation, and wheelchair support.



Maintain a safe, organized, and hygienic environment conducive to comfort and well-being.



Support the establishment of structured routines that foster consistency and predictability.



E. Documentation and Reporting



Accurately document all daily activities, progress, and incidents in service notes.



Submit daily service notes with GPS verification at the end of each shift.



Record behavioral observations, achievements, and concerns to ensure effective continuity of care.



Communicate regularly with families, supervisors, and care team members to maintain transparency and consistency.



F. Community Engagement and Social Integration



Support individuals in participating in community events, social gatherings, and employment opportunities .



Encourage the development of peer relationships and positive social interactions.



Assist individuals in navigating social environments and developing confidence in community settings.



G. Health Monitoring



Observe and respond to ongoing health conditions such as seizures, diabetes, or other chronic issues.



Assist with medical appointments, follow-up care, and treatment adherence .



Promote healthy living practices , including exercise, balanced diet, and preventive wellness measures.



H. Team Collaboration and Support



Collaborate with nurses, behavior specialists, and supervisors to ensure consistent and holistic care.



Participate in team meetings and contribute insights on individual progress or needed adjustments in care plans.



Qualifications



Education:



High school diploma or equivalent required.



Experience:



Prior experience in caregiving, home health, or direct support for individuals with IDD is highly preferred.

Work occurs in in-home care or community-based programs , such as day centers or recreation facilities.



Flexibility in scheduling may be required, including evenings, weekends, and overnight shifts .
