The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a crucial role in providing care and support to individuals with developmental disabilities, ensuring their well-being and enhancing their quality of life. This position involves assisting clients with daily living activities (including meal preparation, household chores and bath routines), promoting independence, and fostering a supportive environment. The DSP will work closely with clients in various settings, including group home and community environments. The Direct Support Professional is responsible for creating a rewarding and safe living environment for individuals with mental/physical challenges.
Responsibilities
Assist clients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, and meal preparation.
Provide patient care and support in accordance with individualized care plans.
Monitor and document client progress, vital signs, and any changes in behavior or health status.
Ensure a clean and safe living environment by performing light housekeeping tasks.
Assist with medication administration as directed by state regulations.
Engage clients in social activities to promote community integration and enhance social skills.
Implement strategies for individuals with autism, dementia, or other developmental disabilities to improve their daily functioning.
Provide companionship and emotional support to clients while maintaining professional boundaries.
Collaborate with healthcare teams to develop and adjust care plans based on client needs.
Skills
Experience working in group homes or assisted living settings is highly desirable.
Strong patient observation skills to identify changes in client behavior or health.
Knowledge of HIPAA regulations to ensure client confidentiality.
Ability to perform heavy lifting when necessary (e.g., using a Hoyer lift).
Proficiency in cooking and meal preparation for clients with dietary restrictions.
Compassionate caregiving skills combined with the ability to work effectively with individuals who have disabilities or special needs.
