Job Description

The Accokeek Foundation seeks a dynamic, mission-driven Development Manager / Director to provide leadership, oversight, and execution of comprehensive fundraising and development strategies. Reporting directly to the Executive Director and working in close partnership with senior leadership and the Board of Trustees, this role is responsible for planning, managing, and expanding diverse revenue streams that support the Foundation's annual operating budget, strategic priorities, and long-term sustainability. The Development Manager / Director will lead organizational development efforts across individual, corporate, foundation, and government giving, while also overseeing donor communications, stewardship, and fundraising events. Depending on experience, this role functions at a managerial or director level, with corresponding authority for strategic decision-making, staff supervision, and cross-departmental leadership.

Responsibilities



Leadership & Oversight



Lead, manage, and oversee all development and fundraising functions of the organization. Direct and supervise development-related staff, consultants, and volunteers, as applicable. Mentor and empower staff to achieve fundraising goals aligned with organizational values. Serve as staff liaison to the Board of Trustees' Development Committee, advising and supporting trustees in their fundraising roles. Represent the Foundation at donor meetings, community events, and external engagements.

Strategic Planning & Implementation



Develop, design, and implement a comprehensive development plan aligned with the Foundation's strategic plan. Establish annual and multi-year fundraising goals, forecasts, and performance benchmarks. Plan and optimize strategies for annual giving, major gifts, grants, capital campaigns, corporate sponsorships, and planned giving. Collaborate with the Executive Director on budgeting for fundraising revenue and expenses, analyzing trends and adjusting strategies as needed. Support the implementation of capital campaigns in coordination with campaign leadership, consultants, and board committees.

Development & Fundraising Execution



Oversee and manage all aspects of broadening the Foundation's funding base. Cultivate, solicit, and steward individual, corporate, foundation, and government donors. Research and evaluate prospective funders with capacity and alignment to the Foundation's mission. Write and oversee the development of high-quality grant proposals, reports, and funding requests. Support program and project leaders with grants management tools, timelines, and compliance requirements. Provide leadership for special event fundraisers, from concept through execution and evaluation.

Marketing & Communications



Develop and implement an integrated fundraising and communications strategy that strengthens the Foundation's brand and advances its mission. Oversee donor-focused communications, including appeals, acknowledgements, impact reports, webpages, and digital campaigns. Ensure consistency and quality across all print and digital communications, including annual reports and marketing collateral. Collaborate with leadership to prepare presentations, talking points, and materials for donor and public engagement. Maintain and oversee photo, video, and storytelling assets that communicate impact and stewardship.

Decision-Making & Problem-Solving



Analyze fundraising performance data and donor trends to inform strategic recommendations. Prioritize initiatives and allocate resources to maximize fundraising effectiveness. Resolve challenges related to donor engagement, campaign performance, and compliance. Recommend innovative approaches to donor cultivation, stewardship, and engagement.

Performance, Compliance & Systems Management



Monitor and assess fundraising performance against established goals and benchmarks. Ensure timely, accurate, and compliant donor reporting and acknowledgements. Maintain and verify accuracy of the constituent database and donation-related webpages. Uphold ethical fundraising standards and best practices.

Qualifications



Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience required; advanced degree or CFRE certification welcomed. Five or more years of progressive experience in nonprofit development, with demonstrated success in fundraising and donor stewardship. Proven ability to manage multiple revenue streams, including grants, individual giving, and corporate support. Strong strategic planning, leadership, and communication skills, with the ability to translate vision into action. Experience partnering with boards and senior leadership in a collaborative, mission-driven environment. Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends to support events and meetings.

Compensation and Benefits



This is a full-time, exempt position with competitive compensation commensurate with experience, ranging from $60,000-$70,000. The Accokeek Foundation offers a flexible and supportive work environment, including a hybrid schedule with remote work options, while requiring the employee to be based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and able to work on-site as needed.
