Job Description

Responsibilities:

- Enforce laws and ordinances to maintain public safety and order
- Patrol assigned areas to deter criminal activity and respond to calls for service
- Conduct investigations, gather evidence, and interview witnesses
- Arrest and process individuals suspected of committing crimes
- Serve warrants and subpoenas
- Provide traffic control and enforce traffic laws
- Respond to emergencies and provide assistance as needed
- Maintain accurate records and prepare detailed reports

Requirements:

- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- Successful completion of a certified law enforcement training program, or eligible to obtain one within one year by the South Dakota Law Enforcement Standards and Training Commission.
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to make quick decisions under pressure
- Excellent conflict management and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to work in a militarized environment with strict adherence to rules and regulations
- Proficient in surveillance techniques and use of surveillance equipment
- Strong driving skills with the ability to operate emergency vehicles safely

Dewey County is located within a multi-jurisdictional area. We work side by side and with the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Department. Candidates must be willing to and able to work well with others. Candidates shall be able to work well under limited supervision.

Dewey County participates in the South Dakota Retirement System (Class B Public Safety).

Equipment necessary for deputies to do their job safely and effectively is provided, including but not limited to: Take-home patrol vehicles; body cameras; Uniform equipment (body armor, duty gear, etc. provided): and, an annual uniform allowance.

In addition to basic training, Dewey County affords various opportunities for advanced and instructor-level training and an 7-week field training program.
