Performs complex supervisory and professional duties in maintaining law and order in Tooele County and the State of Utah. Performs a variety of technical professional and first-line supervisory law enforcement duties related to planning and coordinating assigned division of assigned jurisdiction. Performs advanced day-to-day quality assurance in serving and protecting the citizens of assigned jurisdiction. Must be a Utah Peace Officer Standard and Training (POST) Basic Corrections Officer certified Correction Deputy and/or Law Enforcement Officer as defined in Utah State Statute at time of hire. Must complete forty (40) hours of POST approved training per year.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the direct supervision of the Lieutenant and/or Administrative Superior.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Exercises supervision over Deputy Sheriff's and duty related activities involving reserve Deputies, volunteers, etc.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
Exercises supervision over lower ranking officers assigned; coordinates activities and assists in performance of their duties; observes and evaluates work performance by subordinate officers; ensures compliance with established policies and procedures; provides policy interpretations and judgments to subordinate officers; delivers and implements managerial directives and communicates subordinate concerns to management; Issue oral and written orders as may be necessary.
Follows up on complaints involving shift officers, reports and insubordination or misconduct to management. Acts as shift/field supervisor; patrols to prevent and suppress crime and enforce federal and state laws and jurisdictional ordinances.
Subject to call out 24 hours a day.
Sets work schedules; assigns patrol areas and special details.
Responds to calls for assistance, investigates outstanding cases.
Performs specialized duties in areas such as investigation, fingerprinting, etc.
Reports on shift activities to administrative superior.
Administers first aid to accident victims and aids ambulance personnel when needed.
Assist other communities in investigations. Assists in extinguishing fires occurring on public lands in the County.
Maintains vehicle and equipment daily. Assures proper upkeep and care of all supplies and equipment which are issued to their command.
Assure proper wearing of the uniform by all sworn uniformed officers of their command. Enforce compliance with the provisions of the rules, regulations and policies of the department and Tooele County.
Conduct classes and provide information to the public on law enforcement and other areas of public safety.
Provides field training for Deputies and reserve officers. Also, provides specialized instruction to all department members and officers of the State of Utah.
Performs related duties as required by law.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and experience:
Graduation from high school; Must be a Utah Peace Officer Standard and Training (POST) Basic Corrections Officer certified Correction Deputy and/or Law Enforcement Officer as defined in Utah State Statute at time of hire. Must complete forty (40) hours of POST approved training per year. Three (3) years' experience as a POST certified law enforcement officer minimally LEO certification, two (2) years as a Deputy Sheriff with Tooele County Sheriff's Office or have held the rank of Sergeant or higher as a certified Law Enforcement Officer with another agency.
Maintain Qualifications established in Sergeant Career ladder as follows:
Must have first line supervisor certification with a commitment to ongoing leadership training; successfully pass the department promotional tests as outlined in County/department policy. Retain training certifications of Deputy III. Must complete and maintain certifications in; radar, intoxilyzer and keep up to date on Daily Training Bulletins, successfully complete and pass the department firearms qualification(s). Successfully complete and pass physical fitness test at the department standards. Certification in CPR. Knowledge of personal computer software; ability to type. Required to work rotating shift schedule and be willing to work on-call hours.
Failure to meet and maintain the minimum qualifications, knowledge, skills and abilities for this position will result in demotion.
