Position Overview
The
Laborer
performs a variety of skilled and unskilled tasks related to the maintenance, repair, and construction of Claremont's public infrastructure. This includes work on roads, sidewalks, drainage systems, water and wastewater facilities, cemeteries, solid waste facilities, and other public properties.
Because this position frequently interacts with the public, professionalism and a positive attitude are essential in representing both the department and the City.
Key Responsibilities

Safely and properly operate hand tools and equipment used in construction and maintenance, such as shovels, rakes, crowbars, brooms, and related tools.
Operate light, medium, and heavy vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
Perform maintenance, repair, and installation of:
Water systems -- including storage tanks, pump stations, valves, hydrants, and service connections.
Sewer systems -- including pipes, manholes, pumping stations, and related structures.
Stormwater systems -- including culverts, ditches, basins, and drainage structures.
Streets and sidewalks -- including paving, patching, grading, concrete work, and curb repair.
Install, repair, and maintain traffic control and street signage.
Maintain public grounds -- mowing, watering, trash removal, planting, and general beautification.
Assist with cemetery operations including interments, maintenance, and snow removal.
Support operations at the solid waste transfer station and perform general maintenance of buildings and shops.
Conduct tree maintenance and removal, including pruning and treatment for disease prevention.
Provide guidance or instruction to less experienced staff members as needed.
Perform other related duties to support the mission and reputation of the Public Works Department.
Education & Experience
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred:
Post-secondary trade school training related to heavy construction or public works.
Experience:
At least two years of relevant construction or maintenance experience, or any combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the necessary skills and aptitude for this role.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials used in public works and construction.
Ability to perform physical labor outdoors for extended periods under varying weather conditions.
Understanding of occupational hazards and commitment to maintaining safety standards.
Skill in operating light to heavy motor equipment, including on rough or icy terrain.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and maintain accurate records.
Strong teamwork and communication skills with the ability to represent the City respectfully to the public.
Supervision
Received:
Works under the general direction of the Superintendents and Working Foremen. Assignments are made by Division Foremen, who provide general guidance and review progress. Many duties are performed independently once trained.
Exercised:
May provide direction or guidance to less experienced staff to promote high standards of performance within the department.
Public Contact
Daily interaction with residents, contractors, and other City staff requiring courtesy, discretion, and sound judgment.
