This position receives Hazardous Duty Pay, which is paid biweekly at $60 (not included in above wage)

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Corrections, Division of Medical & Forensic Services has a full-time vacancy for a Dental Assistant located at the Northern NH Correctional Facility in Berlin, NH.


Summary:





Working under the direction of a dentist or hygienist, maintains dental clinic operations by preparing dental instruments, equipment and taking x-rays, assists a dentist in implementing standard dental procedures, and works in close and immediate contact with prisoners daily while maintaining security.


YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Education/Experience: Equivalent combination of 3 years of education and experience after completion of high school. Education and experience must be in the medical or dental field and must include 1 year of experience as a Dental Assistant.


License/Certification: 1.Valid driver's license and/or access to transportation for statewide travel.


2.Certification in Radiation Health and Safety issued by the National Dental Assistant National Board (DANB).


Other Requirements: 1. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.


2. Must pass security and background screenings required for correctional environments.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


1. Electronic health records experience.


2. Experience performing data entry in electronic programs.


3. Experience using Microsoft programs such as Word, Excel, etc.


AFTER-HIRE REQUIREMENTS:


Successful completion of the Corrections Academy within 12 months of hire and continuing certification as correctional line personnel as established by the certifying authority.

The work of an employee in trainee status in this position shall be overseen by a fully qualified individual. An employee in trainee status shall meet the minimum qualifications within the period of time specified on the SJD, not to exceed one year of being hired into this position.


Responsibilities:





Independently sets up a daily dental clinic in preparation for a variety of dental treatments for scheduled incarcerated inmates and/or dental emergencies.


Prepares dental equipment for daily use ensuring equipment is operational, sterilized and in good working order after each dental treatment. Ensures infection control protocols are followed and in compliance with departmental policy.


Prepares inmate for dental procedures, provides information to inmate on what procedures will be done and instructs inmates on proper oral hygiene, maintenance of oral health and after-care needs for any dental procedure performed.


Performs radiological exams and develops x-rays for dentist's review and evaluation.


Prepares materials for fillings, takes preliminary impressions on inmates for study cast, pours impressions and makes nightguards to assist dentist in the care of dental needs for inmates.


Prepares and files inmate case histories, dental charts, and treatment records to keep current on the dental status and needs of individual inmates. Assists other areas in facility medical units by scanning records, making calls to medical offices, responding to calls for outside records and scheduling appointments for all kinds of needs.


Monitors and maintains dental supply inventory levels and provides requests for supplies to supervisor. Monitors and tracks tool inventory daily to ensure institutional safety and security. Ensures dental supplies are not expired.


Assists in the training of new dental assistants and contracted dental personnel on institutional security protocols and procedures related to inmate movement, instrument handling and inventory and computer programs.


Receives, directs and/or responds to inmate request slips that relate to dental service complaints or needs and interprets specialized plans for medical needs as it relates to any settlement agreements, legal actions and/or inmate complaints received.


Monitors the condition of inmates during treatments to identify any evidence of distress, aggression, or other behavioral matter that may require immediate attention.
