The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater is seeking dependable, safety-conscious Deck Hands to join our backstage production crew. Deck Hands play a vital role in the execution of live performances, ensuring the smooth, efficient, and safe movement of scenery, props, and stage elements during tech rehearsals and performances. This position works closely with the Stage Manager, Deck Supervisor, and other members of the production team to support the artistic and technical goals of each production.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Stage Operations
Assist with the setup, operation, and strike of scenery, props, and stage equipment for rehearsals, performances, and changeovers.
Execute scene changes accurately, efficiently, and quietly as called by the Stage Manager.
Verify that all scenic and prop elements are correctly preset and securely fastened prior to each performance.
Support load-ins and load-outs as directed by the Technical Director.
Fly System and Rigging (as assigned)
Safely operate the theater's fly system under the direction of the Deck Lead or Stage Manager.
Conduct pre-show safety checks of flown elements, line sets, and rigging hardware.
Adhere to all established safety procedures and best practices for rigging and fly operations.
Backstage Coordination and Communication
Maintain clear communication with the Stage Manager and fellow crew during all rehearsals and performances.
Collaborate with other production departments (props, lighting, sound, costumes) to ensure seamless transitions.
Keep backstage areas organized, clean, and free from hazards or obstructions.
Technical Rehearsals and Support
Participate in technical rehearsals to learn cues and assist with adjustments to scene changes or backstage choreography.
Provide general technical support as needed, including minor repairs or adjustments to scenic or prop elements.
Respond calmly and efficiently to unexpected issues or emergencies during performances
Safety and Compliance
Uphold all theater safety policies and procedures, including those related to rigging, lifting, and personal protective equipment.
Report any safety concerns, damaged equipment, or unsafe conditions to the Stage Manager, Deck Supervisor, or Head of Stage Management immediately.
Follow all fire and emergency evacuation procedures.
Skills and Qualifications:
Education & Experience
No formal education required; training will be provided.
Prior experience in stage crew, backstage operations, or technical theater preferred.
Skills & Competencies
Basic understanding of stagecraft, backstage operations, and cue-based performance timing.
Familiarity with fly systems, rigging, and scenic handling techniques preferred.
Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to follow direction precisely and adapt quickly to changing situations.
Reliable, punctual, and professional demeanor under pressure.
Physical stamina to lift, push, and move scenic elements (up to 50 lbs), climb ladders, and work in confined or elevated spaces.
Availability for evening, weekend, and holiday performances as required by the production schedule.
