Job Summary
The Data Science Researcher in the Ma Research Lab at the School of Polymer Science and Engineering conducts research of novel polymeric material systems through a data-driven approach. The successful candidate will integrate into a supportive work environment and lead the efforts of database curation and artificial intelligence and machine learning model training and testing to investigate the processing-structure-property relationships in polymeric material systems. In addition to conducting advanced research, the individual will collaborate with graduate students and mentor undergraduate students in the group. Responsibilities also include analyzing and interpreting data, preparing technical reports and publications, and presenting findings to both scientific community and funding sponsors.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct data-driven investigations, applying artificial intelligence/machine learning approaches and database tools to research novel polymeric material systems.
Analyze complex research data and prepare manuscripts, proposals, technical documents, and progress reports for both scientific audience and funding sponsors.
Oversee data management and model training and testing.
Supervise and mentor undergraduate students by guiding research priorities, monitoring progress, and providing technical expertise and direction.
Facilitate communication and reporting with funding sponsors, ensuring timely updates and compliance with funding requirements.
Participate in travel to research conferences, sponsor meetings, and host visiting collaborators.
Comply with all University and departmental policies, procedures, and regulations and perform other duties as assigned.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Master of Science degree from an accredited college or university in Materials Science, Data Science, or a closely related discipline, with at least three (3) years of experience in materials science and/or data science or PhD degree from an accredited college or university in Materials Science, Data Science, or a closely related discipline. A demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications is essential.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong knowledge of polymer materials science, including principles of structure, properties, and performance.
Proficiency in data science and related analytical methods.
Ability to independently design, analyze, and interpret complex technical data with objectivity and accuracy.
Demonstrated capacity for independent thinking, problem-solving, and innovation in a research or technical setting.
Self-motivated with the ability to manage tasks and deliver results with minimal supervision.
Skilled in working effectively within collaborative, multidisciplinary teams that include scientists and engineers across diverse fields.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly to both scientific experts and general audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in one or more of the following computational techniques would be strongly preferred: artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data-driven materials design.
