POSITION SUMMARY:

HIAS is seeking a Data Protection Associate, LAC to support its global data protection and privacy programs. This person will report to the Director, Data Protection, and they will assist in the development, planning and implementation of data protection and privacy processes, training and tools. The incumbent will provide support to the Director, Data Protection in leveraging processes, training and tools to reduce exposure, mitigate risk and provide countermeasures. The incumbent will work closely with colleagues across headquarters and regional teams, country office colleagues and technical departments in the process of implementing administrative, technical and physical data protection controls.

This position can be based at our headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland or our offices in New York, New York, and we will consider a remote option for applicants who live outside of commuting distance to either of our offices and are based in other states in which we are registered (Arizona, California, Colorado, Iowa, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin). This position can also be based in the LAC region in countries where HIAS has existing operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Creates or co-creates data protection materials, documentation and templates.

Ensures proper documentation and upkeep of Records of Processing Activities (ROPA).

Creates and/or assists with quarterly reports, using Excel and/or Power BI.

Analyzes data protection and privacy needs of the organization, particularly at the regional level, and identifies opportunities for improvement.

Provides support for incident/breach management with data protection or privacy implications.

Closely coordinates with Programs staff (technical, country offices and regional teams), as well as the IT department, to ensure that the protection, purpose and use of data collected at HIAS is clear.

Leads or co-leads remote group meetings, trainings and data protection and privacy team calls.

Serves as subject matter expert for data protection and privacy awareness; this includes advocacy, analysis, training and support for compliance with the Data Protection Policy, as well as related policies.

Assists in the analysis of information from relevant partner agencies, UN agencies and other organizations related to data protection and privacy requirements.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Travel, to include travel to insecure operating environments, may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

Undergraduate degree in a relevant field preferred.

1-2 years of relevant experience with data protection and privacy.

Both English and Spanish fluency are required.

Demonstrated ability to understand data protection framework, data in motion, data at rest and data in use.

Understanding of digital security, data protection and privacy awareness topics and best practices.

Comfortable with remote collaboration as part of a diverse global organization.

Strong analytical and critical skills.

Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently, manage time and execute tasks.

Experience working in humanitarian and refugee settings is desirable.

Ability to work in a fast-changing environment, multi-task and context-switch effectively between different activities and teams.

Team player with a team-focused mentality.
