Job Description

North Reading Public Schools is seeking candidates for a full-time Maintenance Custodian/Bus Driver position. In this role, you will focus on the maintenance and upkeep of school grounds, system-wide. Work is both indoors and outdoors as needed on regularly assigned maintenance/custodial duties. This position reports to the Director of Facilities and Grounds Foreman.



The hours for this position are anticipated to be 7:00 AM-3:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Regular work hours during the summer months (July-August) may vary.

Essential duties

Cut and remove grass Weed whack along fence lines and field perimeters Line fields with paint or apply lime, de-water, add field clay and stone dust Service and operate irrigation equipment, aerate and over seed fields, including fertilizing Maintain benches, bleachers, and back-stops on regular schedule Remove leaves, trim trees, and maintain tennis courts General trash removal Maintain and service the following equipment: truck, snow plow, sander, trailers, tractor, mowers, line painters, infield scarfier, leaf vacuum, leaf blower, small gas operated tools, Toolcat, hand tools, and other miscellaneous equipment Open and rototill fields for various sports Snow plowing, sanding, and salting, general snow/ice removal including removal from school roofs Tree and brush cutting and removal, grass cutting all non-sports areas Flower purchasing, planting and mulching, and maintaining playgrounds Leaf removal from all non-sports areas Roof drain cleaning and Grounds debris removal 24 hour emergency response to any weather related issues that could impact public safety Furniture moving as needed, including but not limited to, moving personnel between schools, gathering and storing surplus computer monitors Coordinate and support supply deliveries Install signs and traffic cones, including removal, for town and school events Mail delivery when needed 7-D student van driving when required Open schools for absent employees Hazardous waste removal maintenance and repair of buildings Asbestos training Food delivery when needed Pest removal Maintain courtyards Weekend/holiday on call as needed Safely operate Town and School equipment and vehicles Other associated work may be required as assigned by Administration Other duties as determined by the Director of Facilities and/or Manager of Buildings and Grounds/Working Foreman

Physical demands:

Tasks require the ability to exert strenuous effort in work requiring moderate to heavy physical activity. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to move about and is continuously required to stand. The employee must spend most of their 8-hour shift on their feet. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Emptying trash can involve lifting bags weighing up to 40-50 lbs. Handling of other heavy items up to 70 lbs. such as paper boxes, etc. may be required; although the use of wheeled carts and assistance is encouraged whenever possible. Cleaning the cafeteria sometimes involves folding and unfolding the cafeteria tables. Snow and ice removal involves use of a snow blower and/or shovel; as well as handling 50 lb. bags of ice-melt. Dry-mopping and wet-mopping is repetitious work. Use of a six to twelve foot ladder may be required for tasks like changing light bulbs or hanging pictures. Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination and the ability to distinguish color. The employee must be able to input information into a computer and as well as read material from a computer monitor as well as printed matter with or without visual aids.

Requirements

Clear driving record and valid driver's license CDL license 7D license Hardworking and energetic Works well with colleagues Works proactively without supervision Excellent communications skills Demonstrated aptitude or competence for carrying out basic carpentry, electrical, plumbing, roofing, painting, heating, grounds, and mechanical repair Knowledge of chemicals, asbestos management, Safety and Material Safety Data Sheets High School diploma, or equivalent, post-secondary training in a buildings and grounds maintenance field is preferred At least 3 year(s) of relevant experience preferred Citizenship, residency or work visa required
