Position Summary
The position is a key member of the Temple Israel staff, responsible for ensuring the cleanliness, safety, and overall readiness of the synagogue's facilities. This position supports the congregation's mission by maintaining a welcoming and well-kept environment for worship, education, and community programs. This position also assists with event setup and basic maintenance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, stairways, and other assigned areas.
Sweep, mop, vacuum, and remove debris from floors and surfaces; clean spills promptly to ensure safety.
Collect and dispose of trash and litter from the building interior, parking lot, and surrounding grounds.
Clean windows and polish stainless steel and other surfaces as needed.
Maintain the organization, cleanliness, and safety of janitorial and storage areas.
Receive, prepare, and facilitate setups for religious services, lifecycle events, meetings, and programs, including arranging furniture, tables, and equipment.
Wash dishes and assist in maintaining a clean and orderly kitchen, social hall, and food service areas.
Perform or assist with minor maintenance and seasonal duties such as snow and ice removal on employee sidewalk and the front door.
Assist in preparing facilities for Shabbat services, holidays, and major congregational events such as High Holy Days.
Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the proper functioning and presentation of the facility.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required
Minimum of one (1) year of custodial, janitorial, or facility experience preferred.
Working knowledge of cleaning techniques, materials, equipment, and safety practices.
Ability to work respectfully within a Reform Jewish environment and around religious items and observances.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and perform physical tasks such as standing, bending, and walking for extended periods.
Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Professional demeanor and sensitivity to the religious and cultural needs of the congregation.
Work Schedule
This is a full-time position. The work schedule may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays to support the synagogue's worship services, educational programs, and community events.
