The Iowa State Fair employs about 75 year-round full-time staff members, 25 interns in different departments, and 1,600 seasonal or fair-time staff members.

CUSTODIAL WORKER

Position Summary:

The Custodial Worker is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of buildings and grounds. This role requires working both independently and as part of a team to ensure facilities are ready for use, while reporting any maintenance concerns promptly.

Key Responsibilities:

Perform cleaning and maintenance tasks, including shampooing carpets, sweeping, mopping, and general janitorial duties. Operate cleaning equipment such as ride-on and walk-behind scrubbers, foamers, ride-on sweepers, hoses, and power washers safely and effectively. Respond to minor plumbing issues, including plunging toilets and clearing simple blockages. Work in both indoor and outdoor environments, in hot and cold weather conditions. Follow oral and written instructions accurately and complete tasks with minimal supervision. Report any facility issues, maintenance needs, or safety concerns promptly to supervisors. Work a flexible schedule, including weekends and some holidays, to support events or operational needs. Maintain and manage inventory of all custodial supplies in buildings, ensuring adequate stock levels, proper storage, and timely restocking as needed. Employees must consistently follow Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and all safety procedures to ensure a safe work environment.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Valid driver's license. Ability to work independently and follow directions accurately. Physical ability to perform janitorial duties, including lifting, carrying, bending, and standing for extended periods. Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.

Physical Requirements & Work Conditions:

Work requires exposure to various weather conditions (hot, cold, rain). Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry moderate to heavy items. * May be required to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
