SUMMARY

The Multilingual Department is looking to fill a Cultural Facilitator vacancy at the Davis Center. Working relationships or knowledge within the Afghan Community is preferred.

Under minimal supervision, serves as a bridge between parents and Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS). Focus on engaging, supporting, and empowering parents of color to increase and improve communication and cultural understanding, resolve concerns, and increase protective engagement of parents in their child\'s education; build long-term relationships with diverse families resulting in more parent involvement and student success.

  • Develops and enhances meaningful and authentic parent engagement, involvement, and leadership in departments, schools and the community.
  • Utilizes culturally and linguistically competent/relevant and respectful approaches at all levels of service and in all interventions.
  • Assists with planning, developing, and presenting programs and services; assists with implementing training and testing programs.
  • Bridges communication gaps and cultural understanding between the department, staff, school, students, and families; helps families to understand and navigate through the school system.
  • Acts as advocate for families to provide an equal learning opportunity; helps students to be successful in the learning environment and help families\' access school resources.
  • Acts as a resource for staff when working with families and students from other cultures.
  • May conduct home visits to better assess and understand the needs of each family.
  • Translates and communicates school and department documents as needed and interpret during meetings and testing.
  • Coordinates and facilitates integration, leadership, and achievement programs.
  • Works closely with Community and Family Liaisons to help establish and maintain adequate community partnerships to facilitate the integration of cultural families with the District.
  • Serves as an advisor by triaging community issues/concerns from the community.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops, and committees for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and remain knowledgeable with program guidelines.
  • Prepares a variety of documents, reports and written materials as necessary.
  • Measures effectiveness through data analysis.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment
  • Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent\'s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

Bachelor\'s degree in education or a closely related field, AND two (2) years of demonstrated experience in community engagement experience specifically in communities of color; AND native speaker with proficiency in professional writing and reading in one of the following languages: English, Spanish, Hmong, Somali; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

Knowledge of:
  • Rules and regulations of the Minnesota Department of Education and other governing agencies.
  • Applicable policies, procedures and regulations covering specific areas of assignment.
  • Principles and practices of public relations, training and development, marketing, recruitment strategies and public communications.
  • Knowledge of working in a diverse setting; specifically within the Latino, Hmong, Somali and African American communities.
  • Cultural competency.
  • MPS policies, process and procedures.
  • Customer service principles, protocols and methods that include responding professionally, effectively, and efficiently to customer service requests.
  • Local community resources and regional community services programs.
  • Principles of office management, record keeping and records management.
Skill in:
  • Providing effective customer service, and dealing tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Gathering and compiling data, and reporting findings.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers and clients.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Understanding and maintaining highest level of confidentiality.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A valid Minnesota State Driver\'s License may be required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a standard office environment which requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage.



Final candidates may be invited to interview with a committee. Final appointment to this position will be contingent upon passing a criminal background check.
