Full Salary Range:

$72,900 - $102,100 annually

Anticipated Hiring Range:

$72,900 - $87,500 annually

Job Summary



The Criminalist works with law enforcement officials to uncover facts and evidence in criminal cases. The Criminalist is vital to the success of the Greeley Police Department and provides specialized investigative support which allows GPD to spend more time providing proactive policing services to the public. This position is a non-sworn equivalent to a Detective in the Investigations Unit. The Criminalist will work on a specific team with a primary focus on that team's mission (fraud / cyber crime, internet crimes against children, crimes against persons, gang crime, or property crimes).



Experience, Education, and Skills



Minimum Requirements



Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or related field, or POST Certified. Two to four (2-4) years of experience in law enforcement, investigations, or intelligence operations. Two to four (2-4) years of experience handling and maintaining chain of custody and integrity of evidence.

Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job,
AND


Possession of a valid driveraEUR(TM)s license.

Preferred



Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



Ability to understand laws, judicial procedures, regulations, rules, and guidelines related to crime and evidence. Investigative and analytical skills. Ability to conduct interviews, collect evidence, and prepare reports. Ability to handle and maintain chain of custody and integrity of the evidence. Knowledge of the business and organizational structure of Colorado municipalities. Travel



Category B-Regular Local/Field Based Travel: This position requires regular travel within the County and nearby cities. Employees frequently travel to field sites, client locations, or other City buildings as part of their job duties. Access to a personal or City fleet vehicle may be required.



Essential Functions



Investigates complex criminal activities or local, federal, or state law violations. Gathers and verifies evidence through interviews and observations of suspects and witnesses or by reviewing and analyzing records and logs. Analyzes and interprets data, documents, and records to uncover evidence. Examines items of evidence to discover, preserve, identity, and collect evidence. Identifies scope, timing, and direction of investigations and justifies changes in that criteria based on findings. Compiles and reports detailed investigative findings. Completes search and arrest warrants affidavits. Provides court testimony regarding observations and determinations of criminal activity. Compiles complete and accurate written reports of findings. Communicates with law enforcement personnel of confidential information regarding ongoing criminal investigations. Communicates with attorneys and other judiciary personnel of confidential information regarding on-going criminal investigations and court proceedings. Adequately prepares for effective presentation of findings in a court setting. Keeps up to date on changes in laws and procedures. Maintains contact with other law enforcement agencies and personnel. Stays abreast of new technologies used in investigations. Prioritizes own casework. Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements



Work Environment



Work is primarily performed indoors and with minimal exposure to the elements. Work is performed at a fixed workstation. Possible exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Possible exposure to electrical shock while dealing with computer-based evidence. Assists with the execution of search warrants at locations away from the station.

Physical Requirements



May lift light to moderately heavy evidence packages from one location to another. Communication skills enough to hear and convey information to/from the public via phone and in person. Operates standard office equipment requiring repetitive hand / arm movements. Vision enough to interpret computer screens and documents to assist the public and computer work assignments. Manual dexterity enough to accurately input, retrieve, and verify work assignments. Extensive work performed on a computer with repetitive data entry and retrieval.
