General Responsibility Statement

The Crew Chief position in our company represents an individual who possess mastery of all expectations of a farm hand/crew member. An individual must not only master these skills but must have the ability to effectively teach and monitor these duties. The Crew Chief is responsible for overseeing teams of Farm Hands/Crew and is synonymous with 'Assistant Farm manager' or 'Team Lead'. They must work well with other Crew Chief's (within and outside their department) and should be able to step in and temporarily fill the role of 'Farm Manager' when required.

Key Responsibility Areas

Manage teams of workers to ensure efficient, productive, and safe working conditions exist. This can include, but is not limited to: gear repair, maintenance and installation, tumbling/grading, dragging/harvesting, sorting and bagging/counting of product, and raising/winterizing oysters and gear. Contribute to yearly farm plan with Farm Manager and effectively carry out goals/targets. Use and safely demonstrate how to use all machinery/equipment on the farm. Ensure that thinning, harvesting, and food safety protocols are being followed, as laid out by Farm Manager. Encourage farm hands to report any issues or concerns, and then report these to the Farm Manager. Resolve conflicts between workers and effectively communicate up and down the chain of command, including when errors occur. Track and report performance, reliability, and leadership potential, with a focus on developing high performers and correcting poor performance. Accurately record farm data as directed by Farm Manager. Monitor shellfish inventory, growth, health and safety. Notify superior if concerns arise. Effectively convey information up and down chain. Professionally engage with others, including other farmers and riparian landowners; be a good ambassador for the company. Ensure facilities are kept in an orderly and neat fashion and that crews are properly trained to MBAq's standards. Understand and follow MBAq policies and procedures of Safety, Uniform and PPE, Sanitation, Employee Hygiene, and Biosecurity. Contribute positively to a cooperative team environment. Other relevant duties as assigned by management.

Thorough understanding of maintenance and cleanliness standards. Thorough understanding of all small equipment operation. Safely operate all vessels (unless specific training needed for a particular craft) with crew members on board and in a variety of weather conditions. Ability to temporarily fill the Farm Manager role. Create a motivated highly productive team that adheres to all MBAq's safety and policy procedures. Ensure crew can pivot and respond to unplanned variables during the week Foster a strong safety culture. Effectively record and enter in data/information used to monitor and track the farm's performance.

Skills and Qualifications

Trained and competent in operation of all small and heavy machinery on the farm (Forklift, conveyor, 38' vessel, winch, etc). Ability to identify efficiencies and provide a "continuous improvement" mindset. Problem solving; including anticipating, identifying, troubleshooting, and communicating problems. Ability to print Shellfish tags and compose Bills of Lading. Ability to navigate in all weather conditions and when visibility is low/minimal. Understanding of procedure when boarded by Coast Guard. First-aid certified. Understanding of HACCP requirements (tagging product) and Vibriorules/regulations. Mastery of all gear types and moorings/layouts on farm. Ability to safely tow, haul, and launch boats. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to follow direction. Proficient in time management for daily tasks. Reliable, honest, respectful, professional. Observant. Able to work on feet all day and lift 50lb.

Pay: From $25.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
