General Statement of Duties: Conducts jail duties. The PART TIME Correctional Officer I is responsible for the security of the jail, the prisoners and for facilitating a safe environment for those persons remanded to the custody of the Sheriff.
Supervision Received:
Works under the direction of the Level-3, Supervisory Staff and the Level-4, Staff.
Supervision Exercised:
None
Grades:
Grade 1 is a Trainee. Grade 2 is an operating employee. Grade 3 is an employee who has developed an expertise in an area of worth to the Agency.
Duties of this classification include:

Advises immediate Supervisor.
Apprises immediate Supervisor of any problems, issues, or significant activities.
Processes inmates.
Conducts work release program.
Ensures jail sanitation.
Controls inmate movement.
Provides routine medical care to prisoners.
Maintains appropriate data in Unit data bases.
Exhibits concern for the physical and moral welfare of all prisoners.
Ensures that all personnel are in compliance with the office policy and procedures.
Maintains a good working relationship with other Law Enforcement Agencies.
Other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:
Testing and Evaluations:
He/she must be able to complete a minimum of 40 hours of Correctional Officer basic training within 14 months of hire
He/she must pass a physical agility test
He/she must pass a psychological evaluation
He/she must pass a background check
He/she must pass a urinalysis
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
He/She must possess a working knowledge of Jail duties. He/She must be fluent in Custody Division Policy Manual. He/She must have displayed sound interpersonal skills in working with fellow staff, prisoners, court officers, and the general public.
Physical Standards:
He/She must meet the minimum physical standards established to perform the duties of a Corrections Officer. The established physical standards are delineated in Appendix B to this section of the policy manual.
Education:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. He/She must be capable of obtaining a South Dakota Law Jailer's Certificate.
Experience:
Custodial experience desired.
Miscellaneous:
Hours will vary to include nights, weekends and holidays as well as general business hours.
