Position Summary & Responsibilities



Position Summary:



This is advanced managerial correctional work in a small institution or providing program support to a deputy secretary. Work involves managing programs and operations in a small corrections institution or developing and coordinating a program for a deputy secretary in central headquarters. Incumbents manage programs in support of the general mission of the Department of Corrections.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:



Supervision / Administrative




Responsible for overall management of the following departments and associated staff at KJCC: Unit Team, Activity Therapy/Recreation, Chaplaincy, Reentry Services, Programming, and Records. Develops and updates departmental plans which clearly define the goals, objectives and rules of programs and activities. Available for individual and group supervision to provide consultation to subordinates, utilizing both informal coaching and performance reviews to provide direction and feedback related to work performance strengths and areas needing improvement. Provides consultation, assistance, and directions to Program Division staff to assist with barriers or responsivity issues concerning delivery of programming or services to juvenile residents and serves as a role model in the appropriate use of risk management techniques. Updates position descriptions for program staff, monitors priority outcomes, and provides back up services in subordinates absence or delegates this to another program team member. Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-based practices, core correctional practices in corrections, adolescent development, and proficiency in risk reduction skills including motivational interviewing and cognitive strategies. Stays abreast of policy and regulation changes and/or updates assuring those updates are shared with staff and juvenile residents as affected.

Program / Team Facilitation




Works directly with Operations, Behavioral Health, Education, and other departments within the facility to foster and model a multi-disciplinary approach to resident management. Provides consultation to these teams and participates in these processes as necessary to assist with addressing challenging issues and problems. Meets regularly with administrative staff and Programs staff to disseminate relevant information and to discuss issues/solutions. Provides oversight and ensures that information is shared and communicated between programs and all other affected departments, fostering a team approach. Works with staff to develop and implement programs, activities, interventions which are in line with best practices - such as unit action plans, behavior contracts, Resident of the Month, as well as other special activities and incentives programs. Provides support and assistance to staff to help assure the quality and fidelity of programs is not compromised. Serves on various facility/departmental work teams, committees, and boards as assigned by supervisor and is a member of the KJCC Executive Team and PREA Compliance Committee. Conveys ideas and information clearly and comprehensively, effectively expresses self in presentation of ideas. Communications include verbal and written presentations, in both formal and informal settings.

Data Collection/Analysis/Reporting




Extensive reporting and data collection responsibilities are involved with this position. Maintains and supervises the collection of statistics and data to monitor compliance with evidence-based practices, ensure program fidelity, and to monitor desired outcomes and program goals/trends. Adequate flow of information must be maintained between appropriate facility staff, the juvenile correctional facility, the juvenile's family, and appropriate community agencies. Prepares and submits appropriate in-house documentation, correspondence and progress reports as necessary. Prepare other reports as required. Establishes quality assurance processes with departments and formal methods of documenting effectiveness and fidelity of programs being delivered within the facility. Provides feedback to the Deputy Superintendent regarding the policies and procedures of both the facility and the Kansas Department of Corrections as well as the resources needed to meet the goals/objectives that have been developed by/for the team.

Completes other duties as assigned by supervisor or through initiative to maintain successful operation within the Classification and Records Division.

Qualifications




Four years direct experience in criminal justice, social science, behavioral sciences or public administration plus three years of supervisory and/or administrative management experience in the field of corrections.
