Job Description


Summary

Part Time Investigator position. After training, assigned 8-12 hour shifts will vary and majority will include nights, weekends, and holidays. Others shifts available include during daytime weekday hours to cover open shifts not filled by Full Time staff. Must have the flexibility to cover any shift if required by department needs.

Essential duties and responsibilities:
Include but not limited to: determining case jurisdiction, responding to death scenes, conducting investigations including interviews, securing medical records, taking photographs, arranging and assisting with transport of the deceased, assisting with autopsies when needed, writing reports as per department SOPs, and other duties/tasks as may be assigned by the Coroner/Chief Deputy Coroner.

Qualification requirements:
Bachelor\'s degree and experience in medical, pre-hospital, medicolegal, or law enforcement setting (or relevant advanced degree). Obtain national certification (D-ABMDI) within 24 months of hire.

Work environment includes exposure to hazardous conditions including but not limited to waterways, roadways, harsh weather, unsafe structures, odors, body fluids, and infectious diseases. Must be able to bend, lift, and maneuver decedents at least 100lbs.

Preferred: Chester County residency or living in close proximity to Chester County border; Experience or Education in medicolegal death investigation; Current ABMDI certification.

Applicant must possess a valid driver\'s license and obtain criminal background checks and child abuse clearances.

This position requires availability 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. This is an Essential Employee position. Essential employees are obligated to report to work as scheduled or remain at work during emergencies. Following is the Duty Statement for Essential Employees:
"Carries out essential job functions or assigned emergency duties which may involve assignments within the Coroner\'s Office, deployment to a field location to participate in emergency management activities, or other duties as required during periods of emergency. If received, emergency assignments may be performed under adverse conditions and continue for periods ranging from a few hours to several weeks".

Essential Duties

Essential Duties, Tasks and Accountabilities:

  • Be available during assigned shifts to respond immediately to dispatches from Emergency Services and to carry out death investigations, including jurisdictional and non-jurisdictional cases. Investigations may include examining deceased bodies, photography, interviews, obtaining records, follow up with law enforcement and health care providers, and collection of evidence and personal property.
  • Complete all reports, data entry, and documentation for a death investigation within the assigned shift and transfer unfinished follow up (other than narrative report) to the next shift
  • Assist in following up investigations for other investigators, including cases transferred from a previous shift
  • Provide autopsy and toxicology assistance to the Forensic Autopsy Technician and Pathologists as determined and assigned by the Coroner or Chief Deputy Coroner
  • Provide back-up support for office staff to include competency of all assigned office procedures
  • Assist in peer review of investigators\' reports, issuance of cremation authorizations, and evidence/records request forms
  • Obtain and maintain national certification (D-ABMDI) within 24 months of hire date
  • Facilitate and/or provide assistance with transportation of human remains, as necessary.
  • Perform other duties, tasks, and office functions as determined and assigned by the Coroner or Chief Deputy Coroner.
Qualifications/Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelor\'s degree from an accredited college or university in a major relevant to the position
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working with the public, preferably in medical or emergency services settings
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to work any shift, sometimes on short notice
  • Must reside in Chester County
Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience:
  • Experience in a coroner or medical examiner office or experience in a medical or pre-hospital setting or at least 1 year of law enforcement experience or mortuary or funeral home experience
  • D-ABMDI certification or eligible within 12 months
  • Experience as a Medicolegal Death Investigator
  • Knowledge of County policies and procedures
  • Excellent ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without supervision
  • Accurate and detail-oriented
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
Additional Information

Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have:
  • Basic to Intermediate Microsoft Office skills including Intermediate PowerPoint skills
  • Ability to learn QuincyTech or other death investigation case management software
