Job Summary



The Coordinator for Student Leadership Programs is a 12-month, full-time, live-in, professional staff position within The Office of Residence Life and the Student Affairs Division at the University of Utah.



Reporting to an Assistant Director of Residence Life, the Coordinator for Student Leadership Programs advises the University of Utah's Residence Hall Association ( RHA ) and National Residence Hall Honorary ( NRHH ) and supports the Community Council program to advance leadership development, and student advocacy across the Office of Residence Life's residential communities. The Office of Residence Life and the University of Utah value interactions among individuals with varying traditions, cultures, identities, expressions, orientation, religious beliefs, economic backgrounds, and racial/ethnic origins. + The Coordinator for Student Leadership Programs is a full-time, live-in staff member.



+ The Coordinator for Student Leadership Programs will keep regular office hours. Evening and weekend commitments will be required to fulfill duties of the position.



+ While serving on-call, the Coordinator for Student Leadership Programs will remain within a 20-minute response time of the University. Coordinators are expected to serve on call during holidays, weekends, and evenings as needed to ensure 24/7 coverage. On-call responsibilities are split among staff members.

Essential Personnel:

This position is considered to be an essential personnel position for the department, and as such, must be accessible and available in the event of emergencies or when needed to meet the ongoing mission of the University.

The majority of work will be completed in-person on-site with some remote flexibility, pending approval



Responsibilities



1. Residence Hall Association/National Residence Hall Honorary



+ Train, advise, and evaluate the students comprising the RHA and NRHH executive boards respectively.



+ Meet regularly with advisees on an individual and group basis, while supporting executive board functions and progress on organizational goals.



+ Attend all RHA and NRHH executive board and organizational meetings and events.



+ Support the planning, execution, and assessment of RHA / NRHH programs and initiatives.



+ Ensure RHA / NRHH operates in accordance with organizational, departmental, and institutional policy.



+ Provide training and ongoing professional development for student leaders



+ Travel with, and advise the University of Utah's Delegations, to regional and national conferences associated with RHA / NRHH .



2. Supervision



+ Train, supervise, and evaluate a Graduate Assistant.



+ Meet regularly with supervisee(s) to check in and provide ongoing development and support.



+ Support Graduate Assistant in their role as organizational advisor.



+ Indirectly supervise student leaders from different areas when necessary, during on-call or department wide initiatives.



+ Provide both on-going informal and formal performance feedback.



3.



Community Council



+ In collaboration with the Assistant Director, provide support in implementation and development of the Community Council program, to include expectation setting, financial planning, and program assessment and follow-up.



+ Provide training to Office of Residence Life staff in their roles as Community Council Advisors in partnership with the Assistant Director.



+ Coordinate the planning and execution of Community Council Executive Board training with the RHA Executive Board and Community Council Advisors.



+ Support the Assistant Director in facilitating Community Council fall elections.



4. Administrative Tasks



+ Serve as a liaison to a variety of campus partners, including but not limited to: Housing & Dining Programs, Office of the Dean of Students, Student Experience, Student Engagement & Involvement, etc. regarding resident management as needed to support residents and manage spaces.



+ Serve on or Chair a Residence Life committee to assist with essential team tasks such as Student Leader selection and training.



+ Maintain an area budget and approve expenditures in accordance with purchasing guidelines.



+ Work to advance the University, Division of Student Affairs, and Office of Residence Life's strategic plan through participation in goal setting, program implementation, committee/task force work and assessment efforts.



+ Attend various meetings on a weekly/biweekly basis including, but not limited to: Residence Life staff meetings, area staff meetings, committee meetings, and weekly meetings with students and supervisors.



+ Participate in and/or manage large scale annual processes such as training, opening/move-in, evaluations, etc.



5. Emergency and Crisis Response



+ Take part in a 24/7 on-call duty rotation along with all Coordinator level staff.



+ Respond to emergency situations and assist in resolving resident and facility concerns and needs.



+ Provide appropriate post-crisis referrals and follow-up with students and staff as needed.



+ Serve as a liaison with the University Police Department, Dean of Students, and Counseling Center.



+ Share responsibility in maintaining health, fire, and safety standards.



+ Serve as a Campus Security Authority for the University of Utah and assist in reporting incident information as needed.



+ Be familiar with all facilities overseen and supported by the Office of Residence Life, to ensure effective response and support.



6. Facilities Management



+ Ensure the proper stewardship, staffing, and operation of facilities and spaces assigned to RHA / NRHH .



+ Partner with departmental facilities teams to ensure the successful implementation of programs and events.



+ Develop familiarity with all departmental spaces utilized in programming and event facilitation.



7. Student Accountability & Support



+ Respond and process alleged policy violations as reported by staff, students, University Police, or community members utilizing the University of Utah's Advocate software package.



+ Serve as a hearing officer for high level cases leading up to eviction occurring within the Office of Residence Life's residential communities.



+ Maintain due process and a learning-centered philosophy when sanctioning and engaging in the conduct process.



+ As needed, work student support cases in consultation with office leadership and staff within the Office of the Dean of Students.



8. Community Relations



+ Maintain close communication and positive relationships with residents, students, and professional staff.



+ Coordinate and represent the Office of Residence Life Department on committees, recruitment activities, or projects as assigned.



+ Develop and maintain positive relationships between RHA / NRHH and campus and community partner organizations.



+ Oversee the development of a community and educational environment that encourages student engagement, positive relationships, and student success.



Resources/circumstances depending, this position could supervise a graduate assistant(s) and or student staff team(s).

Minimum Qualifications



Bachelor's degree in a related area plus two years experience in residence life management, programming, student activities or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Demonstrated supervision, organization, planning, group dynamics, human relations and effective communication skills also required. Master's degree in College Student Personnel or related area and one year post-master's related experience preferred.



Preferences



+ Direct experience working in housing.



+ Direct experience responding to student crisis and/or facility emergencies.



+ Direct experience advising student organizations/boards, particularly residential leadership programs (or equivalent).



+ Direct experience hosting large scale events.



+ Experience developing and facilitating student facing training programs.



+ Experience analyzing and resolving conflict, building teams, and managing group dynamics.



+ Knowledge of current and emerging principles within Student Affairs and the Office of Residence Life.



+ Ability to multi-task and remain organized in a high energy and fast paced department.



+ Experience proposing and negotiating contracts with vendors.
