Job Summary:
The Controls Engineering Manager provides leadership and direction for Rogers' Automation Engineering team. This position manages design, programming, and integration of industrial automation systems to support the company's manufacturing and service operations. The Manager ensures consistent application of controls standards, develops team capabilities, and delivers reliable automation solutions that meet customer and production goals.
Essential Job Duties:
Leadership & Strategy
Lead, coach, and develop a team of automation engineering technicians.
Establish department goals and KPIs that align with Rogers' strategic direction.
Develop and maintain engineering standards, procedures, and best practices.
Plan and manage department budgets, staffing levels, and resource allocation.
Project & Technical Oversight
Direct design, programming, testing, and commissioning of PLC, HMI, VFD, and industrial communication platforms, ensuring robust and reliable system performance.
Review and approve electrical and controls design documents to ensure compliance and safety.
Support production, service, and automation projects from concept through completion.
Identify and implement process improvements that increase reliability and system performance.
Ensure all designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and safety requirements.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with Manufacturing, Production Engineering, and Service to develop automation strategies.
Collaborate with Sales and Project Management to scope, estimate, and plan automation projects.
Serve as a technical advisor for customer interactions and internal stakeholders.
Support troubleshooting and field service efforts as needed.
Additional Job Duties:
Develop and maintain preventive maintenance and documentation standards for controls systems.
Evaluate and integrate new technologies (SCADA, IIoT, data analytics) to support continuous improvement.
Lead root cause analysis and corrective action for system or process failures.Participate in company-wide safety initiatives and ensure safe design and operation of equipment.
Support training and development for engineers, technicians, and production personnel.
Provide after-hours technical support or respond to critical issues as needed.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Controls, or related Engineering field (Master's preferred).
10+ years of relevant industry experience, including 3+ years in a leadership role.
Strong knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.).
Experience leading automation or controls projects in industrial or OEM environments.
Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Valid driver's license; travel up to 10% may be required.
Preferred Skills:
Familiarity with SCADA and IIoT systems.
Experience with Rockwell Automation, Siemens, AutoCAD Electrical, or EPLAN.
Knowledge of functional safety and control system validation.
Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop engineering staff.
Physical Demands:
Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
Regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle tools, components, and computer equipment.
Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Ability to climb ladders, access elevated platforms, and navigate manufacturing environments safely.
Must be able to wear required PPE (safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, etc.) as needed.
May require occasional travel to job sites or other Rogers facilities.
