Hansen Storage Company is currently seeking a controller with a combination of strong technical skills and a high level of business acumen. Reporting directly to the president, this is a unique opportunity for a motivated accounting leader to become an integral member of the management team at a family-owned company with a long history in Milwaukee.
The controller has full responsibility for the accuracy and timeliness of the entire accounting function of the organization. The ideal candidate will enjoy hands-on accounting activities, be highly organized and detail oriented, and demonstrate a collaborative leadership approach. Primary duties for this role and requirements are as follows:
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manages the organization's accounting-related functions including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, credit policies, billing, and fixed asset accounting.
Prepares financial statements, coordinates information with external accountants as needed, manages all audit activity, and compiles required regulatory reports.
Develops and compiles reports for management to analyze key metrics and trends pertaining to the company's financial performance.
Performs cost analysis, research variances, recommends changes, and monitors subsequent improvements.
Assists in the preparation of annual budgets and monitors departmental budgets throughout the year.
Works with external accountants on preparation and filing of annual tax returns.
Completion of state sales tax returns, ensuring timely filing and compliance.
Coordinates payroll tax and reporting.
Manages business and worker's compensation insurance and supports the annual renewal process.
Manages and administers the health and welfare benefit plans and annual renewal process and manages and administers the 401(k) plan including reporting and compliance.
Reviews, tests, and recommends modifications to existing accounting practices, procedures, and internal controls, to increase efficiency and ensure compliance with GAAP.
Monitors financial controls to ensure compliance and decrease liability.
Participates in a wide variety of other projects and tasks as assigned or requested.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and at least five (5) years of professional accounting experience, including prior management experience, are required.
Must have excellent attention to detail along with strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
Strong interpersonal skills, including excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Must demonstrate initiative, work well with employees at all levels of the organization, and be able to work well independently and as part of a team.
Demonstrated ability to serve as trusted business advisor that brings a consultative approach.
Demonstrates the highest level of integrity and business ethics with a strong sense of confidentiality.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs along with knowledge of various accounting and enterprise software is required. Experience utilizing Great Plains, executing upgrades, and evaluating system optimization is a plus.
Experience administering employee benefits strongly preferred.
