About the Role



The

American Board of Dental Examiners

is seeking a detail-oriented and results-driven

Controller

to manage the organization's day-to-day accounting and financial operations. This role oversees accounting functions, financial reporting, payroll, and internal controls while supporting audits, tax filings, and budgeting. Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Controller supervises the activities of a small Finance Administration team and works collaboratively with our internal teams and external stakeholders. This is an ideal opportunity for a hands-on financial leader to contribute to our mission while ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial operations.

Key Responsibilities



Accounting & Financial Operations



Oversee daily accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll. Support the preparation of required filings, including Form 990s, 1099s, workers' compensation, and other state/federal reports ensuring GAAP compliance. Assist in the coordination of external audits and provide requested materials. Manage cash flow and optimize reserves through the administration of the organization's investment portfolio.

Budgeting & Reporting



Prepare accurate quarterly and annual financial statements, providing analysis and insights for leadership review. Assist the Director of Finance in the preparation of the organization's annual operating budget. Monitor and track financial performance against budgets and recommend adjustments as needed.

Administration & Organization Support



Manage relationships with vendors and service providers that support the finance and accounting functions of the organization. Manage payroll processing, employee benefits contributions (HSA, FSA/DCC), and 401(k) compliance reporting. Administer organizational financial policies, including expense reimbursement policies.

Financial Team Management



Supervise Finance Administration team members fostering a collaborative, high-performing, solutions-focus environment. Promote continuous improvement of financial systems, workflows, and reporting processes. Ensure service levels are met with expense reimbursements. Support the professional development, goal setting and performance evaluation of the Finance team members.

Key Skills and Attributes



Proficiency in financial systems, accounting software, and reporting tools. Strong financial acumen with in-depth knowledge of GAAP, audit, tax, and compliance requirements. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to present financial information to non-financial stakeholders. High integrity and commitment to financial transparency and accountability. Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Qualifications



Education:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.

Experience:

Minimum five years of progressive financial management experience, with at least two years in a supervisory role.

Credentials:

CPA (Certified Public Accountant) active license required.
