Job Description

Goodwill of Central Iowa is looking for a Controller to join our mission-focused team working onsite, bringing extensive accounting and management experience to work within our values of love, kindness, and respect.

Position Summary:


The Controller plays a critical leadership role in stewarding the financial health and integrity of our organization. This position oversees all accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, general ledger, fixed assets, and financial reporting. The Controller ensures compliance with grant and contract requirements, leads financial audits, and manages the implementation and maintenance of internal financial systems. This role also supports strategic decision-making through robust budget preparation, forecasting, and reporting, while developing and mentoring a high-performing accounting team.

What you'll do:


Accounting Operations & Oversight
Direct and manage all day-to-day accounting functions including AP, AR, billing, general ledger, and fixed assets. Provides cash management oversight, including the review, approval and transmittal of all transactions and management of all bank accounts. Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting. Maintain and improve internal controls and accounting policies in alignment with nonprofit best practices.
Grant & Contract Accounting
Oversee accounting and reporting for all grants and contracts, ensuring compliance with funder requirements. Collaborate with program and development teams to track expenditures and prepare financial reports for funders.

Audit & Compliance
Coordinate and lead the annual financial audit process, liaising with external auditors and internal stakeholders. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as nonprofit accounting standards.
Financial Systems & Technology
Lead the implementation, integration, and ongoing maintenance of financial software systems. Identify opportunities for automation and process improvement to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Budgeting & Forecasting
Develop and manage the organization's annual budget in collaboration with leadership and department heads. Provide ongoing budget-to-actual analysis, forecasting, and financial modeling to support strategic planning. Oversee the preparation and filing of the annual tax returns (e.g., IRS Form 990) and other required filings.
Team Leadership & Development
Lead, train, and mentor accounting team members, fostering a culture of collaboration, adaptability, and continuous learning through GCI's values of love, kindness, and respect. Set clear performance expectations and provide regular feedback and professional development opportunities. Performs other projects and duties as assigned.

What you'll need:


Advanced skills using Jet Reports, Power BI or equivalent tools in addition to Excel for data extraction, data modeling, and financial reporting. Experience with reporting and budgeting tools. Highly proficient in Microsoft Office including Excel, Outlook, Word, SharePoint, etc Knowledge of accounting systems and database applications. Detail oriented with strong organizational skills, strong analytical, mathematical, and accounting skills. Ability to provide high quality customer service to internal and external customers. Strong initiative and ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining deadlines. Must be able to pass a criminal background check and dependent adult and child abuse background check.

Education and Experience


Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred. Minimum of 5 years experience managing, training, and developing staff and accounting processes. Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and grant compliance. Experience with financial audits, tax filings, and financial software implementation. Proven ability to lead and develop teams with kindness, respect, and a commitment to shared success. Exceptional analytical, communication, and creative problem-solving skills.

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of stationary work at a desk and on a computer. Must be able to lift 15 pounds infrequently.
