The Akron Board of Education announces an opening for a Consultant (Special Education), Job Code 050, TS 380 (190 Days), Salary Range (TBD). Collective Bargaining Unit - AEA. This is a State Teacher Retirement System position.

Qualifications:



Required: Must be met at the time of application except where noted:



Valid Ohio Certification/Licensure in Special Education or Pupil Services (Speech Language Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, or School Psychology); A minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching or related service experience serving students with disabilities.

Desired:



Master's Degree; A demonstrated understanding of special education procedural safeguards; A demonstrated understanding of special education Autism and Jon Peterson Scholarship. A demonstrated understanding of special education court placed and open enrolled procedures. Technology skills to analyze data, create reports, and develop training materials; A commitment to working with students, professionals, and community members in a multicultural setting; Experience and knowledge in how to help adults enhance their skills; Experience in providing professional development to staff across disciplines; Experience with team building practices and effective communication with students, staff and families; Excellent communication and organizational skills.

POSITION DESCRIPTION



Serve as district representative assisting staff with navigating difficult meetings; Consult with classroom teachers and staff in developing and modeling strategies for students, including modifying curriculum and instructional materials; Consult with scholarship, court placed and open enrolled IEP teams in identifying, procuring, and coordinating appropriate special education services to maintain the student in the regular education classroom; Consult with scholarship, court placed and open enrolled teams on modeling and implementing Assistive Technology services for students with disabilities Assist staff with understanding special education procedural safeguards to ensure high-quality services to students with disabilities; Assist teachers in selecting and developing materials and equipment required for students including materials specific to transition and post-secondary options; Assist scholarship, court placed and open enrolled IEP team members in monitoring students' progress in accordance with the IEP; Provide consultation to the scholarship, court placed and open enrolled special and regular education teachers with regard to state and local assessments, including district-wide assessments and progress monitoring; Assist with positive communication with families and agencies; Responsible for supporting special education school staff, related service providers, and paraprofessionals: Assist staff with Individualized Education Program (IEP) development, revisions, and monitoring; Assist students accessing scholarship, court placed and open enrolled with the transition from alternative settings to school environments; Collaborate with community agencies to educate students, parents, and staff concerning postsecondary opportunities and adult services; Consult in the development of instructional or behavioral strategies to enable the student to receive an appropriate education in the regular or special education classroom; Model techniques and materials for identified students in the regular or self-contained classroom; Any other duties assigned by the Director of Special Education.
