Job Description

Horizontal Boring & Tunneling Co.'s Construction Internship offers a unique blend of hands-on experience in trenchless underground construction.

Interns gain exposure to both the field and office operations, learning how each contributes to the success of the company.



This is a full-time summer internship with an option to work part-time during the school year as schedules allow. We offer an opportunity to gain work experience and knowledge, with the potential of a full-time position upon graduation

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, construction labor activities, estimating, drafting submittals, takeoffs, scheduling, and daily inspections. As an intern the goal is to gain a broad experience in many aspects of trenchless construction, while understanding the characteristics of project management and estimating.


Responsibilities:




Performing field assignments along with a crew to learn about trenchless methods, equipment and field production. Performing field survey readings and standard documentation. Reviewing and interpreting project drawings. Operations planning, cost control, quantity tracking, material procurement and office engineering. Assisting with submittals and pre-qualification packages. Assisting with cost estimating, quantity takeoffs and schedules. Reviewing of plans and specifications to determine means and methods. Assisting with crew scheduling. Securing job-related permits. Coordinating the purchase and delivery of project materials. Maintaining records related to bids and projects. Upholding a high standard of safety, including following safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications:




Pursuing a degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related program. Able to travel during the week and on some weekends when on a field assignment during the summer. Able to report to Exeter, NE when assigned to the office. Remote work may be available during the school year. Valid driver's license, pre-employment drug and background screening. Must be able to pass a DOT physical.

Required Skills:




Strong math skills, including the ability to perform mental math and think analytically. Ability to read and understand construction drawings and specifications. A developing knowledge of construction methods and best practices. Problem-solving and critical thinking skills, including the ability to plan and conceptualize. Good communication skills, written and interpersonal - Strong initiative and work ethic. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Computer skills in Microsoft office, especially Excel. Experience with construction industry software is a plus.

Opportunity for advancement and the potential for full-time permanent employment after graduation. Opportunity during internship to gain additional skills such as becoming a certified welder or obtaining a CDL license.
