Under general supervision, is responsible for performing a variety of professional engineering
work in the office and field; performs other related duties as required.
The duties listed below are intended to illustrate work functions performed by this classification:
Prepares Traffic Engineering studies and reports;
Designs new culverts; prepares or supervises preparation of construction plans for culverts;
Designs new highway construction; prepares or supervises preparation of construction plans for
highway construction including pavement, traffic control, guardrail and drainage;
Inspects or supervises inspection of all types of county highway construction projects performed
by contractors; makes detailed hydraulic studies and calculations, as required; performs various
surveying work, as required; supervises county work crews on projects; operates transit; checks
grades and levels;
Estimates quantities and costs of materials needed in construction; assists in purchasing of
materials and equipment for maintenance repair or replacement of culverts; prepares contract
documents, advertisements, plans and specifications for bidding; performs all other related duties
as required.
Knowledge of principles and theories of civil engineering; knowledge of methods, materials and
equipment used in public works construction; knowledge of surveying as related to development of
preliminary plans for construction work; knowledge of highway, hydraulic design; knowledge of public
relations; ability to prepare specifications and technical reports; ability to interpret field data; ability to
communicate effectively; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates,
supervisors and the general public; ability to supervise others.
Walking, climbing, working outdoors in inclement weather, may be exposed to dirt, dust, fumes, noise, water, inclement weather and/or moving traffic. Sitting at desk for long periods of time; exposure to construction sites, variable terrain, variable temperatures. May be required to work weekends or holidays and variable hours during heavy construction periods.
Any combination of training and work experience which indicates possession of the skills, knowledge and abilities listed above. Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) preferred. An example of minimum acceptable qualifications for this position is:
Possession of a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering, or a closely related field. Possession of a valid
State of Ohio motor vehicle operator's license and verification of vehicular insurability under the Medina County Commissioner's requirements.
