Position Summary:

The UAF College of Liberal Arts is hiring a Academic Student Services Professional (Comprehensive Advisor) to provide comprehensive advising to students enrolled in our 16 departments, and to assist with student recruitment, enrollment, and retention management programs. Some in-state or out-of-state travel may be required. Some evening, weekend, or extended hours work may be required. We seek an energetic individual who is enthusiastic and passionate about the success of college students that represent a wide diversity in terms of cultural backgrounds, age, economic level, and personal history. This recruitment is open internally to current UA employees or those otherwise eligible to apply to internal postings.

Duties:


1-70%Advising and Advocacy -Provide comprehensive advising to College of Liberal Arts students (including new students, transfer students, and returning students, in-person and remote students). -Serve as an expert guide and resource for students, faculty and staff on topics related to academic advising. -Maintain confidentiality and professional demeanor by adhering to FERPA, Title IX and other federal and institution regulations. -Stay current with requirements related to athletic, international, and veteran students. -Assess students\xe2\x80\x99 personal circumstances and needs towards assisting with referrals/navigation to appropriate resources (e.g., financial aid, housing, student-related activities). -Assess students\xe2\x80\x99 circumstances and needs towards appropriate courses and course modalities. -Interpret test scores and academic record and use judgment when determining course placement and semester load. -Develop semester plans to ensure timely degree completion. -Assist with student degree audits. -Stay current with, and educate and assist students, faculty, and staff in understanding and navigating University policies, processes, procedures (including degree requirements, and important dates and deadlines, petitions and appeals). -As required and appropriate, identify and collaboratively advise with departmental faculty mentors, and other advisors (e.g., SSS, TRIO, RSS). -Conduct appropriate research to best respond to questions and concerns from students, faculty, and staff. -Assist students with major/career exploration.Essential
30%Program Planning and Development/Enrollment and Retention Management -Plan, develop, organize, and evaluate on or off-campus presentations and/or events pertaining to academic advising, orientation, recruitment, and registration. -Work with CLA Public Information Officer, department Chairs and faculty on planning, developing, organizing, and evaluating recruitment and retention materials and events. -Initiate and participate in communication and outreach campaigns focused on recruiting and advising general or specific student populations. -Actively participate in advising roundtables, meetings, trainings, and committees relevant to academic advising, recruitment, registration, retention, and success. -Represent CLA on UAF initiatives (e.g., Early Warning Program, 1st year progress reporting, timely registration) -Collaborate with other academic advisors and faculty mentors across UAF. -Develop and collaborate on developing and disseminating program related reports toward continuous growth and improvement. -Stay current with, and use appropriate software/programs to maintain electronic records of advising activities and track student data -Synthesize and distribute data/reports that help departments, CLA, and UAF to gauge important metrics (e.g., student enrollments, student progress towards degree completion, student requests, student needs).Essential

  • Knowledge of advising practices and principles.
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities and tasks in a fast-paced student-centered environment.

  • Ability to function in a multi-office setting with several functions integrated in service.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and legal issues associated with and applicable to student service and hire education (e.g., FERPA - Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, Title IX).
  • Ability to assess academic transcripts, calculate GPA\xe2\x80\x99s, interpret UAF catalog requirements, and analyze student data.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply university policies and procedures as they relate to students.
  • Knowledge of university curriculum.
  • Knowledge of University system and resources available to assist students, faculty, and staff (e.g., financial aid, housing, career services, student support services, disability services, tutoring).
  • Ability to apply student development theories gained through experience and education.
  • Skill in teaching and training.
  • Skill in written and oral communication/public speaking.
  • Skill in active listening, intercultural competency, and conflict resolution to establish rapport and provide appropriate (positive and negative) feedback with students, faculty, and staff.

Preferred Experience:

Two years of experience in advising, teaching, or student services or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education.


Required Education or Training:
Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in related field and relevant experience, OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.



Salary Information:
This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 79, based on education and experience.
