The Fire Department is hiring two Limited Duration Inspector positions

intended to last for 18 months.



What you will do:



The Community Risk Reduction Inspector is responsible for conducting fire inspections of regulated structures in accordance with Oregon Fire Inspector 2 standards, applying relevant fire and life safety codes to existing conditions. The position also supports Deputy Fire Marshals by assisting with public education programs, Youth Fire Setter Assessments, fire origin and cause investigations, and Fire and Life Safety Plan Reviews. This role requires a solid understanding of fire codes, fire behavior, and fire investigation techniques, along with the ability to perform related duties as assigned.

Perform fire inspections of regulated structures:


The Community Risk Reduction Specialist performs fire inspections of regulated structures within the fire department's response area, utilizing the applicable Oregon Revised Statutes, Oregon Fire Code, Salem Revised Code, and referenced standards. Fire inspection reports are prepared and provided to affected building owners and/or occupants. Follow-up inspections are performed to verify that identified hazards are corrected.

Assist Deputy Fire Marshals:


The Community Risk Reduction Specialist will occasionally assist Deputy Fire Marshals with various tasks, including public education presentations, youth fire setter assessments, Fire Department plan reviews, and fire origin and cause investigations.

What are the minimum qualifications?

Must pass the pre-employment background check and drug screening. Must have an Oregon Driver license and meet the City of Salem's driving standards. Graduation from high school or trade school, and have an Associate's degree in construction technology, civil engineering or related field, or two or more years of experience performing journey level (independent) work related to the area being inspected by the position. State of Oregon Residential Structural Inspector (CAS) International Code Council (ICC), Residential Building Inspector -B1. Oregon Inspector Certification (OIC) required (must have the ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire and maintain during course of employment.) International Code Council Fire Inspector I Shall obtain D.P.S.S.T NFPA Fire Inspector I, OSFM Oregon Fire Inspector I within twelve (12) months of appointment as a condition of employment. Shall obtain D.P.S.S.T NFPA Fire Inspector II, OSFM Oregon Fire Inspector II within twenty-four (24) months of appointment as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience performing fire inspections for an organization of comparable size, complexity, and population served. Associate degree (or equivalent) in Fire Prevention, Insurance Risk, Public Administration, or a closely related field.
