Project Overview and Description of Duties:

El Dorado Park CDC is part of an initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through composting, community gardening, awareness, education, and participation in community climate action. In addition, this project contributes to initiatives that support the reduction and recycling of organic waste, as well as the collection and redistribution of edible food that would otherwise be disposed of by producers, restaurants, and grocery stores. In partnership with other community non-profit organizations, this project redistributes food to those in need, ensuring better food security in our communities. The Community Climate Fellow will support community engagement and outreach, neighborhood beautification advocacy, community gardening, event planning, and other projects related to environmental education, justice, and awareness. In response to increasing gentrification, we developed an empty lot into a community garden in a neighborhood otherwise lacking natural green spaces. This garden has become a center of activities in our neighborhood\xe2\x80\x94a place where urban greening can be learned, developed, and blossom\xe2\x80\x94while also educating the community about the environment, individual health, how it all relates to the food we consume, and sustainable practices for living in harmony with the environment. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Engage community members through community gardening, composting, food recovery, food distribution, environmental educational awareness events, wildfire resiliency management education, and participation.
  • Support the reduction and recycling of organic waste, as well as the collection and redistribution of edible food
  • Support the distribution of donated and recovered food within our community garden space and beyond
  • Support neighborhood beautification advocacy, community gardening, event planning, and other environmental education, justice, and awareness projects
  • Track, analyze, and report of program progress
  • Participation in 30-60 hours of training and professional development (not to exceed 20% of total service hours)
  • Fellow duties will not include any prohibited or unallowable activities per 45 CFR \xc2\xa72520.65
Desired qualifications/characteristics:
  • Experience in volunteer engagement, event coordination, environmental education, project management, and public speaking/facilitation
  • Interest or experience in climate change mitigation, volunteerism, or public service
  • Experience with outreach, education, training, or community behavior change
  • Community outreach and communications experience

  • Excellent organizational, writing, interpersonal, and speaking skills
  • Academic experience in environmental issues (math and science coursework)
  • Comprehension of climate change science; California environmental policies; and/or environmental issues focused on urban greening, organic waste, and edible food recovery
Benefits of service:

Professional development opportunities via participation in advocacy groups and training like Tenants Together, Industrial Areas Foundation, and partnership with the Economic Opportunities Commission to identify specific resources that would increase social and economic capital and development. Other benefits include:
  • Receive up to a $5,294 stipend (pre-tax) spread evenly over your program term and distributed every two weeks
  • $1,374.60 (pre-tax) Segal Education Award upon completion of your term
