Job Title: Coding Specialist
Reports To: Auditing and Coding Manager


GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Under the direction of the Auditing and Coding Manager, the Coding Specialist is responsible for coding professional medical services and clinical documentation to ensure compliance of coding and documentation guidelines. This is a full-time role working 40 hours per week with generous benefits and competitive compensation.


Essential Job Functions:

• 
  Reviews regulations regarding coding and submission of charges.
• Assigns CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS and modifiers based on clinical documentation and payer requirements.
• Works with medical and billing staff to resolve coding issues and associated problems.
• Consults with and educates providers and staff in proper documentation and coding practices.
• Maintains strictest confidentiality and follows HIPAA guidelines.
• Additional duties as assigned by the Manager to meet department needs.

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Certification by at least one of the following: The American Academy of Professional Coders: Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or American Health Information Medical Association: Certified Coder Specialist-Physician (CCS-P) required.
• Maintains coding certification and attends in-service training as required.
• Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA) preferred.
• 1-2 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in medical coding in a physician office, hospital or clinic required.
• Knowledge of coding policies and procedures, reimbursement practices.
• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
• Experience auditing patient charts preferred.
• Knowledge of health insurance processing and clinic operating policies.
• Skill in using computer coding programs and systems.
• Skill in identifying and resolving problems.
• Ability to examine submitted claims for accuracy and conformity to the law.
• Ability to work effectively with co-workers.
• Ability to communicate effectively and clearly.
• Must be able to travel to all sites if/when necessary.
