The Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department (VBSD) in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) at South Dakota State University (SDSU) invites applications for a 9-month. full time, benefit eligible, clinical, non-tenure-track position in the new Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine (PPVM). Candidates will be assigned the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor depending on qualifications. This position is supervised by the Director of the Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine.

Successful candidates are expected to teach 90-100 percent within the new PPVM. This program will encompass the first two years of a veterinary curriculum whereby each year a cohort of 20 students will begin the professional curriculum and complete the first two years of Veterinary School at SDSU, and finish their final two years of the Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree requirements at the University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine.

This position would teach lectures and laboratories for the veterinary companion animal (small animal) medicine, surgery, imaging, clinical correlations and clinical skills courses in the first and second years of the veterinary curriculum, along with providing lectures and/or coordinator functions in additional courses within the curriculum, depending on expertise. Teaching could include lectures and/or coordination of courses within the following topics: food animal medicine and/or surgery, veterinary anatomy, basic clinical skills, clinical and/or anatomic pathology, microscopic anatomy (histology), radiographic anatomy, systemic (integrated) physiology, endocrinology and reproduction, genetics and genomics, biochemistry (cell and molecular biology), veterinary imaging, veterinary dermatology, professional development, critical scientific reading, veterinary pharmacology and toxicology or closely related disciplines.

This position could also contribute to the research and scholarly mission of the university by providing oversight, advising and mentorship to veterinary students that will be completing their Master of Science Degree at SDSU.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary responsibility for this position is to teach in the Professional DVM degree program, small animal clinical veterinary medicine in the areas of surgery, medicine, imaging, clinical skills, and case based teaching, and coordinate the course content to achieve the same learning objectives and outcomes as the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine\'s first two years\' curriculum.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • D.V.M. or equivalent degree in Veterinary Science, Biomedical or Life Sciences, Animal or Dairy Science, or related field is required by the start date.
  • Ability to teach professional, graduate, and/or undergraduate students.
  • Specific experience in veterinary companion animal (small animal) medicine and/or surgery.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work as a contributing team member;
  • Demonstrated use of technology in managing and/or delivering educational programs;
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate educational materials and direct effective programs.
  • Valid driver\'s license, or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire, and willingness to travel.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in teaching companion animal (small animal) medicine and/or surgery to veterinary students.
  • Board certification and/or advanced degree in companion animal (small animal)medicine and/or surgery.
  • Specific teaching experience in additional courses specific to the veterinary curriculum for the first 2 years which would include physiology, clinical skills, professional development, critical scientific reading, immunology, preventative medicine, basic pathology, agents of disease, clinical correlations, non-traditional pets, veterinary genetics and genomics, pharmacology, systemic pathology, clinical epidemiology, public health, small animal medicine, surgery; large animal medicine, surgery; diagnostic laboratory, veterinary imaging, avian core or dermatology
  • Research experience in the One Health field, basic or clinical veterinary sciences, or production animal agriculture, or related area.
  • Ability to work in a clinical setting with understanding of US veterinary college requirements, along with medicine and surgical skills needed for companion animal (small animal) veterinary clinical practices in North America.
