Job Title:

Civil Process Server (Part-Time)



JOB SUMMARY




Part time position of up to 32 hours per week, benefit eligible. Under the supervision of the Administrative Lieutenant, the civil process server performs work relating to the appropriate service the court or to process. It is the responsibility of this employee to ensure that the legal documents of the court are served in a timely manner. When this is not possible to notify the court as required by law. Performs other duties as assigned. This is an unarmed position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES




The duties described below are indicative of what the Civil Process Server might be asked to perform. This job description is to incorporate any County Resolutions for the position of Civil Process Server. This position description is not designed to list all tasks and responsibilities of this position. Geary County reserves the right to revise or change job duties as the need may arise.




Civil Process.

Receives, researches, and sorts legal documents of the court and determines the most expedient course of action to deliver official court documents to defendants. Verifies information in the documents are accurate and correct and match the legal party being served. Upon disposition of each piece of process, makes return to the court as required by law. Serves civil process papers to individuals who come into the department for such. Must be able to enter military reservation and perform duties as approved by military JAG and Provost Marshal. Can be cross trained to perform vehicle identification number examinations serving as first-line contact when in office.




Administrative Functions.

Reads and interprets court documents. Filing of paperwork as necessary. Performs front desk clerk functions as back-up when in departmental offices.




QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS




To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS




High school diploma or GED. A valid Kansas driver's license. Previous law enforcement experienced is preferred. Familiarity with civil process law, law enforcement and/or court processes. 21 years of age. Must reside within a 30-mile radius of worksite within 90 days of employment. Complete any required training.





SKILLS AND ABILITIES




Ability to read and interpret documents to make determination as to how service is to be accomplished Ability to establish and maintain favorable work relationships with fellow workers, supervisors and Ft. Riley officials Ability to maintain good rapport with the public Knowledge of civil process law, proper execution thereof, and preparing returns of such. Attention to details. Must be able to render creditable testimony in a Court of Law.





LANGUAGE SKILLS




Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.





MATHEMATICAL SKILLS




Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.





REASONING ABILITY




Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

The duties of this job include physical activities such as stooping, kneeling, standing, reaching, walking, lifting and/or move (up to 100 pounds), grasping, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, and repetitive motions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.





Work Environment:




Works in both an indoor setting as well as outdoors. Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather when required. * Due to the volume, scope, size of staff and nature of public service this office provides, regular attendance is essential.
