Essential Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Assists the children's librarian to develop and implement innovative programs that encourage literacy, library use and enhance the image of the library in the community. Assists with planning and implementing storytimes, children's programming and annual youth summer reading programming. Provides outstanding internal and external customer service. Demonstrates a positive attitude and supports library goals and objectives. Assists with daily operation of the children's department of the library. May organize and give tours of the library to students and groups of children. Works closely with teachers, preschool operators, and parents providing recreational, and educational content, programs and materials. Offers outreach programming and events at external locations. Helps build themes for programming and events and decorates the children's area to align with chosen themes. Develops creative bulletin boards and displays to promote programs and build interest and participation. Plans crafts for programs and events. Performs in-depth reference service as needed. Offer assistance to library users navigating library resources and offerings. Assists in departmental collection needs, such as moving books, modifying locations, or shelving titles. This position reports to the Children's Librarian. Assists Circulation Department as needed. Minimum Qualifications

This position is subject to the City of Hobbs' Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes one or more of the following: pre-employment testing, post accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing and follow-up testing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent required with previous compensated work with children's programming preferred.


Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Understanding of child development and children's literature.

Ability to think creatively.


Ability to learn Dewey Decimal System and other alphabetic and/or numeric library material classification systems and place library material in the proper place pursuant to these systems.

Ability to communicate effectively with children of all ages and adults.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library staff and the general public.

Study, learn and utilize principals of ALA's "Every Child Ready to Read" within 60 days of hire.

Study and gain familiarity with New Mexico State Library training resources.

Bilingual preferred.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the guidance and direction of the Children's Librarian.

LICENSING AND CERTIFICATIONS

Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification within 30 days of hire.

Ability to obtain CPR/AED certification within 30 days of hire.

Valid state issued driver's license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and use hands and arms to push and moderately heavy wheeled cart in a level indoor setting and place books or other materials over one foot above their head or below their knees. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet, occasionally noisy when many children are in attendance.

The City of Hobbs will provide 80% to 90% Heath Insurance Coverage from Single to Family coverage. Employees are eligible for 100% short-term disability coverage provided by the City of Hobbs. Employer PERA contributions 14.8% for general, 28.775% for HPD, 30.9% for HFD. CDL pay - $6,000 per year (if applicable). PTO accruals start at 12 hours per month (144 hours per year) and progressively increase based on years of service to 20 hours per month (240 hours per year) at year 21. Bilingual Pay - $1,500 dollar incentive per year upon completion of yearly proficiency test. Education Incentive - ($1,000, $4,000, $6,000 dollars - Associates, Bachelor's, Masters; degree must be relevant to position and above the current minimum requirements of the held position). Longevity Pay - Begins at the completion of 10 years of service. Gradually increased. Retention Incentive - $600 incentive yearly with years 1-9 of completed service 13 Paid Holidays. Bereavement Leave - 5 days per calendar year per personnel rules guidelines. * Military Leave - (120 hours per year for general, 183.75 per year for HPD, 360 hours per year for HFD).
