Under the direction of the Child Development Specialist, the Child Development Assistant assists in the planning, organizing, and implementation of education services for children ages birth-4 years old participating in the fzmily support center or childcare center, in addition to: Developing and implementing individual educational plans for children. While many position responsibilities are outlined, it is understood that specific directives will be provided by the Director as they pertain to the effective and efficient operation of the organization.
This position does not supervises staff, interns, and/or volunteers.
Essential Job Functions
Plan both long and short range activities in accordance with curriculum objectives, developmentally appropriate practice and program philosophy.
Meet the emotional, social, physical and cognitive needs of each child
Encourage assistants to contribute to curriculum planning
Prepare monthly plan charts
Complete continual assessment of children's development
Report progress of children to parents in monthly reports and through parent- teacher conferences
Maintain daily open communication with parents
Keep incident reports
Maintain anecdotal records
Maintain confidentiality
Report any suspected abuse to supervisor
Arrange a classroom environment in accordance to program goals and philosophy
Maintain a safe and healthy environment
Inspect and replace damaged or lost materials
Attend in-service and staff meetings
Keep all appropriate records such as records, attendance and time sheets
Meet all applicable licensing regulations
Facilitating engagement activities between children and their parent(s)
Demonstrates a sound knowledge of good teaching practices and of child growth and development
Non-essential Job Functions
Create teachers' lesson plans, schedules, room arrangements and portfolio assessments to assure their accordance with MSDE and/or Family Support
Center requirements
Provide a minimum of two child development workshops to teen parents
Identify and prioritize materials and equipment needed in classrooms and playgrounds, and coordinate with director in making purchases
Ensure that files are complete, accurate, and confidentially maintained
Perform other duties as may be required.
Attend open houses, workshops, and conferences that relate to program
Demonstrate sensitivity and understanding when relating to parents' situation and feelings
Requirements
Have a thorough knowledge of child growth and development of the first years of life from birth to three years of age
6 semester hours or 90 clock hours or their equivalent of approved pre-service training, or hold the Child Development Associate Credential issued by the Child
Development Associate National Credentialing Program;
An age-appropriate CDA or State equivalent credential; or
An Associate Degree in a related field, such as Family & Child studies, elementary education, with at least 18 credit hours in early childhood education; or
Must be able to lift 55 pounds
Must be able to enter and exit a vehicle without assistance and withstand exposure to adverse weather conditions
Experience successfully working with a culturally diverse staff and clients.

Job requires sitting for long period of time (during planning and reporting) and standing for long periods of time (during observations and training), as well as stooping, squatting, and running;
An occasional driving is required
Must be CPR/First Aide Certified.

Requires ability to use abstract reasoning, problem solving, planning, and analytical skills in: Training, evaluation, and program development;
Requires effective interpersonal and oral communication skills for supervisory duties;
Requires effective writing and oral communication skills to conduct meetings and training sessions, and to prepare reports that are clear, complete, comprehensive, and use good grammar and punctuation;
Successful experience working in a team setting,
Ability to present a positive image of the organization to members of the community;
Visual and auditory acuity within professionally determined normal ranges, with correction if need;
Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer and office equipment, including, but not limited to, the telephone, fax machine, copier, and tape recorder;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
Ability to remain calm when others are in crisis;
