INTRODUCTION AND POSITION OBJECTIVE
The Chief of Seminar assists with planning, coordination, and execution in all aspects of seminar management, and act as the primary conduit between students and the Studies department for academic topics.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
a. SEMINAR LEADERSHIP: (~ 70%)
Serve as senior seminar leader responsible for leading and coordinating senior staff (military, police, and civilians) who serve as seminar leaders and facilitators for the Masters in Inter-American Defense and Security Sciences program;
Organize seminar leaders in internal related tasks for better planning and conduct of seminar leadership and facilitation activities, ensuring optimal coordination between seminar groups;
Organize students in seminar leader groups for the academic courses during the year;
Coordinate and ensure mentoring follow-up by seminar leaders to their students in their home room groups over the academic year;
Permanently monitor, in close coordination with the seminar leaders, the academic evolution of each trainee, identifying performance problems and planning with the Deputy Chief of Studies, Dean of Faculty, and Faculty to establish possible solutions;
Coordinate with Faculty to articulate and synchronize the objectives set by professors in each academic course and activity, facilitating work groups, optimizing discussion and research of key topics assigned for each session, and obtaining feedback that allows for continuous improvement of the Division;
Verify the formulation of evaluation rubrics presented by facilitators to ensure and optimize the spirit of evaluation: honest feedback to students and their constant improvement;
Coordinate with different Departments and Divisions of the IADC for academic and cultural activities following the provisions of the Chief of Studies;
Coordinate with the Academic Division regarding the formulation of monthly reports of the Division;
Coordinate with the Department of Institutional Effectiveness to obtain necessary elements to achieve continuous improvement of the Division;
Maintain a professional development program to improve facilitation skill sets.
b. TEACHING AND CURRICULUM SUPPORT: (~ 25%)
Provide strong leadership and support for academic instruction on topics related to hemispheric defense and security as assigned by the Dean of Faculty and Deputy Chief of Studies, including guidance on syllabi development, multilingual student reading selection, instructional materials creation, and diverse teaching methods appropriate for senior-level professionals;
Provide strong leadership and support to the planning, organization, and conduct of crisis exercises and simulations as assigned, including scenario development, student guidance, and after-action reviews;
Participate in curriculum development activities, including membership on relevant committees and councils related to academic programming and planning;
Coordinate with different Departments and Divisions of the IADC for optimal execution of planned academic, cultural, and crisis exercise activities following instructions from the Head of Studies;
c. OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED: (~ 5%)
The Consultant may be required to perform additional tasks not explicitly delineated in this contract, as coordinated by the Deputy Chief of Studies, Dean of Faculty, or solicited by members of the College Leadership;
Participate in workshops, conferences, and forums related to IADC study topics and contribute to institutional effectiveness initiatives;
Maintain professional development in facilitation skills and academic instruction methodologies;
Support IADC-sponsored protocol and community-building engagement activities as assigned.
FACTOR DESCRIPTIONS AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTSWORKLOAD FLUCTUATIONS
Chief of Seminar leads highly qualified, recently graduated, military and civilian senior officers through the transition from student to practitioner. The Seminar Leaders, led by the Chief of Seminar, impact the student education daily through promoting dialogue, building discussions, and promoting diverse viewpoints and experience for the betterment of the seminar's learning. The Chief of Seminar works with faculty to develop and refine seminar plans and ensures the Seminar Leaders are prepared to bring out the key points from every educational experience.
GUIDANCE AND SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives course specific guidance from College leadership and course faculty. Daily guidance is provided by Chief of Course and the course schedule. Direct supervision is minimal.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The incumbent will establish and actively participate in a professional growth and development plan that will be reviewed and updated annually.
CONTACTS AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS
Coordinate with College leadership, faculty, Chief of Course, Seminar Leaders, and students to train, educate, and structure seminar sessions. Primary contact for all seminar leader development and integrating seminar lesson plans with seminar leaders. Assists Adjunct Professors with seminar plan development.
DECISIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS
The incumbent provides on-site leadership for IADC second year graduates serving as Seminar Leaders. Additionally, responsible for ensuring the training and preparation for each seminar session for a unity of presentation. Recommends to faculty and leadership changes to course material or experiential learning opportunities. Decisions on Seminar Leader management are supported through the Chief of Course and Deputy Chief of Studies.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR RECRUITMENT
Education
Master's Degree in Inter-American Defense and Security required. Advanced degrees desired.
Experience
Four years of experience leading military officers and senior civilian equivalents required. Desire 2 years of experience in international, multi-lingual staff or organization.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Must have active Spanish and English. Excellent writing skills in Spanish and English. Portuguese and/or French are desired.
COMPETENCIES
Must have a thorough knowledge of all major duties and responsibilities. Initiative and resourcefulness required as well as capability to produce accurate and timely work under minimum supervision.
Proficiency in the use computer information systems to produce documents, including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Power Point, PDF.
Demonstrated adaptability to work in an international political, diplomatic, and military environment with senior officials from multiple countries under dynamic situations.
Ability to work harmoniously as a member of a group and with individual colleagues.
Ability to work rapidly and accurately to meet deadlines.
TRAVELLING
Additional travel may be required based on the needs of the College.
WORK SCHEDULE
Availability during required hours to support outlined responsibilities.
Remote work may be authorized by the supervisor when appropriate.
Official holidays of the Board are non-working days.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
This position qualifies for US tax reimbursement for US and permanent residents. The salary for US and permanent residents is $57,889-$67,153 plus tax reimbursement, with a pensionable salary of $73,053-$85,716.
The IADB offers Health and Life Insurance, a pension plan, two weeks of paid vacation, and ten days of sick leave.
This is a full time position of 40 hours per week.
