Duties

As a GS-1320-11/12, Chemist, your duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Planning and conducting in-depth clinical testing involving the review, analysis, and coordination of scientific and technical data.
  • Evaluating progress of experiments to ensure that they are proceeding as planned.
  • Identifying unusual or unexpected results and their probable causes and recommending rerunning experiments/lab studies with patient samples modifying conditions as necessary.
  • Developing new methods for collecting, analyzing, organizing, and recording experimental data appropriate for publication and future reference by others.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Chemist, GS-1320 position, you must have completed the requirements for a bachelor\'s or graduate or higher degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
A combination of education and experience course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition, in order to qualify for a Chemist position, at the GS-11 level, you must have one of the following:

Have completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or an LL.M., if related.
OR
Have 1 year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: assisting with scientific experiments and projects in support of chemical research; assisting a research team in gathering information regarding laboratory samples; performing routine laboratory testing; and preparing graphs and data profiles regarding experimental results.
OR
Have a combination of post graduate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

In addition, in order to qualify for a Chemist position, at the GS-12 level, you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: using a wide range of concepts, principles, practices, and methodologies of chemistry to conduct research and modify or adapt standard processes and procedures; conducting in-depth clinical testing involving the review, analysis, and coordination of scientific technical data; and planning, developing, and implementing chemistry experiments and protocols.
