JOB SUMMARY

Works directly for the Manager/Director and CCS is primarily responsible for ensuring successful operations during assigned shift. The charge nurse assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and collaborates with other departments to ensure excellence in patient and family care reflective of CCMH mission, vision and values. Assists in the planning, direction, organization and leadership of departmental services. The charge nurse practices within the framework of the Wyoming Nurse Practice Act and American Nurses Association (ANA) professional standards as well as specific guiding standards for care area.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Meets all of the job requirements of a dept Registered Nurse.
  • Ensures staff accountability in implementing the nursing process (assessment, implementation and updating plan of care, performing interventions, providing patient and family education, and evaluation of outcomes).
  • Reviews and adjusts staffing levels each shift per department guidelines and as census changes, to ensure that safe and cost-effective staffing levels are maintained.
  • Makes care assignments.
  • Collaborates with Hospital Supervisor to meet staffing needs throughout organization.
  • Rounds on patients to ensure that service expectations are met, and develops action plan to address patient concerns. Real time resolution of complaints or refers as appropriate.
  • Ensures healthy team environment by role-modeling, participating in patient care and re-directing staff as needed to meet patient needs and support fellow team members.
  • Models and fosters customer service excellence.
  • Serves as primary contact for care area concerns, communications, or needs.
  • Coordinates patient flow, facilitates/completes admissions/discharges/transfers to maximize unit capacity.
  • Shares in the responsibility of unit staffing and monitors delivery of unit patient care.
  • Collaborates in development and achievement of departmental goals and objectives.
  • Participates in development of departmental policies and procedures and monitors compliance with standards of clinical practice.
  • Responsible for planning and assists with implementation of departmental training, including orientation, competency assessment, mentoring, coaching and evaluation.
  • Collaborates with physicians and other health care members in communicating the plan of care and anticipated outcomes for the patient.
  • Assists with development and implementation of departmental strategic plan, performance improvement projects and quality initiatives.
  • Provides evaluation data/feedback pertaining to assigned staff to Clinical Supervisor/Manager/Director.
  • Provides coverage as a staff RN, including "at all times" break coverage needed.
  • Monitors Pyxis for discrepancies, clears them by the end of shift.
  • Ensures safety, quality and regulatory measures are performed.
  • Complies with the hospital\'s Corporate Compliance Program including, but not limited to, the Code of Conduct, laws and regulations, and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Must be free from governmental sanctions involving health care and/or financial practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing, BSN Preferred.
  • Licensure
  • Current Wyoming Nursing license.
  • Experience
  • 3 years nursing experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • The ability to maintain continuing education requirements and all certifications and licenses as required (e.g. ACLS, PALS, CPI, CPR) to maintain professional license.
  • Licensed professionals must strictly adhere to the ethical code of their respective discipline.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with patients, family, coworkers, and physicians.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading, coaching, developing, and managing staff in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Proven ability to work through conflict, build trust, and influence outcomes through outstanding interpersonal skills at all levels.
  • Able to communicate positively under stress.
  • Able to prioritize multiple details simultaneously.
  • Able to trouble-shoot problems.
  • Ability to assess a patient\'s condition, formulate a plan of care, select appropriate interventions, evaluate patient response to care/ treatment and to explain/ teach patients about their condition/recovery.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions and under stressful conditions.
  • Analytical and reasoning skills with a high level of mental concentration and memory.
  • Computer knowledge including the ability to enter material into electronic records and operate software. Ability to operate fax, computer, and copy machine to perform the duties of the position.
  • The ability to demonstrate knowledge of developmental stages and apply developmental theories/concepts when planning and implementing care for the appropriate age of the patient. Ability to maintain the appropriate level of knowledge and skills.
  • Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skill in the following age groups:
  • Infant (Neonate to Age 1)
  • Pediatric (Age 1-11)
  • Adolescent (12-18)
  • Adult (19-64)
  • Geriatric (Age 65 and older)
