The Occupational Health and Safety Bureau (OHSB) works to achieve its mission through various means, including compliance inspections, consultation services, compliance assistance, public sector consultation, outreach, education, and recognition programs. By accomplishing its mission in Occupational Health and Safety Bureau (OHSB) saves lives, enhances the quality of life of New Mexico's working men and women, and contributes to the economic vitality of the State.
The Manager will develop and initiates actions to achieve goals and objectives for each program incorporated in the NMED/OHSB Strategic Plan and Annual Performance Plans. Must develop and establish efficiencies in the administration of projects, programs, and activities incorporating NMED's business and organizational objectives into agency-wide utilization of human, financial, and operational resources. Will engage in long term planning, preparation, and execution of initiatives while engaging in problem-solving skills to balance competing interests, considering a broad scope impact of Bureau activities to accomplish New Mexico Environment Department (NMED's) mission. Coordinates OHSB Certification and assistance activities and projects through accountable spending of public funds, responsible implementation of policy, and open communication and collaboration between NMED and its many diverse constituencies. Maintains transparency and ethical standards in the conduct of all operations.
How does it get done?
Cultivate long-term strategic plans, performance measures, and operational procedures to achieve organizational goals
Establish and monitor quality control programs and ensuring adherence to federal and state regulations
Collaborate with public agencies and private stakeholders to meet federal OSHA and NMED requirements
Recruit and develop staff; including: managing and tracking progress towards performance goals, conducting performance assessments, and providing coaching and feedback
Assign work, set goals and deadlines, review and approve work products, ensure policies and compliance are followed and communicate expectations to foster a productive and efficient team environment
Consistent evaluation of operational plans, structures, and internal guidelines to streamline communication, improve workflow, ensure compliance with federal OSHA and NMED requirements
Monitor budgets, expenditures, and audit responses to ensure fiscal responsibility, transparency and alignment with program goals and regulatory mandates

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, engineering, physical science, natural science, environmental science, social science, criminology, or closely related field and nine (9) years of related work experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling thirteen (13) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. This position requires instate travel and out of state travel. Possible exposure to hazardous chemicals, noise, extreme weather conditions and safety hazards.
