Job Description

Follows established procedures to collect specimens for laboratory analysis. Follow strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis & assist in the care of the patient prior to, during and after specimen collection. Identifies health and safety concerns and unsafe work practices within the workplace. Is involved in developing safe work practices and is held accountable for the day to day efforts of ensuring a safe workplace by following safe work practices.



Collects specimens for laboratory analysis and performs point-of-care testing using proper techniques. Interacts with patient and patient's family appropriately to obtain cooperation for specimen collection, personal medical history and consent for procedure to be performed. Phlebotomist has demonstrated age specific competence for all age groups. Follows strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis. Assists in the care of the patient prior to, during and after specimen collection. Determines, from like samples, combinations of tests and the associated acceptable minimum volumes. Knowledgeable of pre-analytic variables, which may affect specimen analysis. Monitors blood collection schedule for STAT, Timed, and Routine collection and prioritizes the workload. Performs routine inquiry and data input on the laboratory computer system and related clerical duties. Performs and documents quality control procedures. Utilizes laboratory computer information system. Maintains established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control. Complies with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies by attending mandatory in-services and continuing laboratory education and participating in continuous quality improvement. Maintains and upgrades personal professional development. Performs, routinely, difficult specimen collections, such as re-draws and misses. Maintains appropriate par levels and organizes supplies and equipment in work areas as assigned. Notifies appropriate associate when re-order levels are reached, and equipment needs to be repaired. Working knowledge of and assists with office procedures and scheduling protocols. Assists in the training new associates or students. Responsible for keeping requisitions files updated. As needed performs all pre-analytic tasks associated with sample preparation including, but not limited to, centrifugation, decanting, specimen distribution, and specimen packaging. Demonstrates a positive, professional image when interacting with patients, staff, students, and others in the hospital. Performs other duties as assigned.

BLS required upon hire and maintained throughout employment.


Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Completion of formal training from accredited phlebotomy program or on-the-job training with experience. Certification or eligible with a recognized board of registry for phlebotomy recommended.
