Canandaigua-Area High School Sports Reporter

The Daily Messenger/mpnnow.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for an insightful sports reporter to cover high school sports in the Canandaigua area of New York state, as well as college sports recruiting in key sports including lacrosse. This reporter covers high school events in Ontario, Wayne and Monroe County - part of the NYS Section V region.

The successful candidate for the job based in Canandaigua possesses digital publishing skills and an enterprising approach to delivering unique and distinctive high school sports coverage for local readers. This is not a position in which the reporter simply covers games. This is a role in which a reporter provides the inside scoop on players, teams, coaches and issues affecting high school sports, whether it be the role of parents or issues of gender or racial equity.

This position requires an inquisitive approach, multitasking, ability to write clearly on deadline, video editing skills and an effective social media voice.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a leading voice in high school sports and an expert on college sports recruiting.
  • Follow the story, not the sports schedule. Coverage should set the stage for each season by pointing out teams and players to watch. It should highlight top performers, tell stories of participants, coaches and families overcoming adversity, and tell the story behind the story for great plays, championship teams and successful coaches and athletes.
  • Contribute to the All-Greater Rochester team selection and content each sports season.
  • Partner with other Gannett reporters in Rochester primarily but at times from around New York state.
  • Connect with the community through social media, including Instagram Stories or Reels.
  • Craft coverage based on audience interest that attracts digital subscribers and brings them back time and again.
  • Shoot videos and still photos for online videos and photo galleries. This might include live coverage or portraits and sound bites and B-roll for enterprise stories and short documentary videos..
Requirements:
  • Bachelor\'s or master\'s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • This can be an entry-level position, but 1-2 years\' reporting/newsroom experience is preferred.
  • Adept at taking photos and video and the ability to file quickly across platforms: mobile, desktop and social media.
  • Strong command of grammar and AP style.
  • Strong copy-editing skills and the ability to produce content that is clean, accurate and "publication ready."
  • Passionate and enthusiastic about news and content that will work well with audiences on social platforms.
  • Ability to multitask and make snap decisions in the field during fluid situations.
  • A desire to grow and develop a key beat in our newsrooms.
  • Comfortable using social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to enhance reporting and promote stories.
  • Understands reporting ethics and sourcing.
  • Excels in a fast-paced news environment and understands the digital first mission.
  • Collaborates well with others and can work with a team on the biggest stories.
  • Able to work occasional late nights or weekends as needed by the news cycle.
  • This role requires a valid driver\'s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check and a motor vehicle record check & drug screen (for driving roles only).
Application Instructions:

We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don\'t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you\'ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:

1. Your resume - one to two pages.

2. A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.

3. Links to 3-6 online samples of your work. Show us what you\'ve produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.

It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
