Why does the job exist?



The Occupational Health and Safety Bureau (OHSB) Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) program works to achieve its mission through data collection from employers on occupational injuries, illnesses, and fatalities that happen in the state of New Mexico. The purpose of this position is to provide support, general research, and data entry for the BLS program. The Occupational Safety and health Statistics Agent engages in frequent communication with New Mexico employers and federal BLS program oversight personnel to collect occupational health and safety data. The Occupational Safety and Health Statistics Agent also provides general administrative support to Bureau Management to ensure state and federal rules, grant requirements, and guidelines are met for program operations.

How does it get done?



Case data entry, address refinement, and general support for the BLS Survey of Occupational Illness and Injury annual reporting Research and contact with New Mexico employers to ensure correct and up to date contact information Contacting New Mexico employers via telephone and electronic communications to ensure program participation Case research and data entry for the BLS Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries annual reporting Research instances of workplace fatalities for entry into BLS database Frequent communication and coordination with federal BLS oversight personnel General administrative and office support for the Occupational Health and Safety Bureau

Minimum Qualification



High School diploma or Equivalency and two (2) years of experience in office administration, budgeting, purchasing, finance, accounting, auditing, cash management, contract management, and/or the procedures of business and management principles involved in strategic planning. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements



Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions



Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. In-state and out of state travel may be required.
