The Biologist provides technical support for remediation, restoration, and closure projects subject to New Mexico Oil Conservation Division (NMOCD) regulations, as well as Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and State Land Office (SLO) requirements. The position focuses on habitat assessment, vegetation and wildlife considerations, reclamation planning, and post-remediation monitoring.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Complete pre and post remediation biological and habitat assessments at oil and gas sites in New Mexico and West Texas.
Evaluate vegetation communities, habitat condition, and potential for sensitive species in accordance with NMOCD, BLM, and SLO guidance.
Develop or support reclamation and restoration plans, including seed mixes, erosion control measures, and revegetation strategies.
Coordinate with geologists and engineers so that biological needs are incorporated into remediation plans and corrective action designs.
Document field observations using standard forms, photography, GPS and clear field notes.
Prepare biological input for technical reports, including site characterization reports, remediation completion reports, and closure submittals.
Support coordination with agencies and landowners on habitat restoration objectives and post closure expectations.
Monitor revegetation and erosion control performance and provide recommendations for corrective actions when needed.
Assist with environmental permitting tasks such as desktop habitat review and threatened and endangered species screening when requested.
Follow company health and safety procedures and participate in Job Safety Analyses and field safety meetings.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or a closely related discipline.
Entry to mid level experience in biological field work, reclamation, or restoration. Title and grade will be aligned with experience.
Familiarity with Southwestern United States rangeland and grassland ecosystems.
Ability to work safely in remote locations, in a range of weather conditions, and on uneven terrain.
Valid driver license and ability to travel frequently to project locations.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting projects subject to NMOCD, BLM, or SLO requirements or similar energy sector environmental work.
Experience designing reclamation and revegetation programs, including seed mix development and erosion and sediment control.
Working knowledge of key federal and state environmental regulations that apply to wildlife and habitat.
Proficiency with GPS data collection and basic geographic information system tools for mapping and reporting.
Strong technical writing skills and ability to interpret and summarize field and monitoring data.
40 HR Hazwoper, Basin United and H2S awareness training completed. Company will provide if needed.
Physical and Travel Requirements
Ability to visit operating facilities, remediation excavations, and active construction sites.
Ability to walk extended distances over uneven ground while carrying field equipment.
Ability to work outdoors during site visits in a range of weather conditions.
Travel up to approximately 60 to 90% of the time, depending on project workload.
