The Billing Coordinator supports and manages billing functions for Comprehend, a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) and Community Mental Health Center (CMHC). This position ensures accurate and timely billing, compliance with payer and regulatory requirements, and effective coordination of billing workflows across programs. This role has no direct reports but is responsible for ensuring billing processes are followed accurately and consistently.
Role and Responsibilities
Responsible for weekly or scheduled billing to all payers, including Medicaid, Medicare, commercial insurance, and grant-funded programs.
Ensures billing practices comply with CCBHC and CMHC requirements, including state reporting, encounter accuracy, and payer documentation rules.
Monitors changes in insurance billing requirements, authorization rules, and payer policies; communicates applicable updates to leadership and relevant staff.
Coordinates provider credentialing and re-credentialing processes to ensure billing eligibility and prevent disruptions in reimbursement.
Reviews unpaid claims, works denials, monitors aging, and ensures timely follow-up on all outstanding claims.
Ensures correct coding practices are followed; assists in resolving coding issues and communicating required changes.
Prepares billing, financial, and productivity reports as needed to support Finance and Program Leadership.
Maintains accurate documentation for deposits, billing adjustments, and write-offs in accordance with internal controls and audit requirements.
Collaborates with Finance on month-end close, reconciliations, GL accuracy, reporting, and audit preparation.
Ensures billing workflows support CCBHC requirements for complete demographic data, encounter capture, and payer compliance.
Keeps current on federal, state, and payer billing regulations, especially those affecting CMHCs and CCBHCs.
Performs other billing-related and accounting duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Education Requirements

Bachelor's or Associate degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, Accounting, or related field
OR
at least five years of experience in medical billing or healthcare revenue cycle.
Medical billing and/or coding certification preferred.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Special Requirements

Strong working knowledge of Excel.
Experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and billing systems; CareLogic experience is a plus.
Ability to prepare, run, and analyze billing and financial reports.
Critical thinking and analytical skills required.
Solid understanding of billing-related accounting processes: month-end close, reporting, GL interaction, denials, reconciliations, and audit compliance.
Knowledge of Medicaid, Medicare, MCO billing rules, and CCBHC-specific reporting requirements preferred.
