About ICRI

Every day, ICRI helps refugees and immigrants from around the world find safety, stability, and opportunity in their new communities. Language is often the first bridge to belonging--and bilingual volunteers make that bridge possible. Your voice, skills, and cultural knowledge can create meaningful connections that open doors for newcomers.

What You'll Do

As a bilingual volunteer, you will help ensure that clients are truly heard, supported, and empowered in their preferred language. This is a flexible volunteer role, and you may choose activities based on your interests, comfort level, and availability.

Depending on your background and preferences, you could:

Interpret during client meetings, classes, or appointments Help translate documents or forms Drive clients to appointments while providing language support Support case managers with outreach or client communication Help connect clients to local resources and services

Assist with ESL classes

by co-leading lessons, supporting small groups, or offering conversational practice

Serve as a mentor

in an area you are comfortable with (education, employment, digital skills, entrepreneurship, cultural orientation, etc.) Provide one-on-one conversation practice to help learners build confidence and fluency

Languages We're Looking For

Spanish, Pashto, Dari, Karen, Arabic, French, Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Haitian Creole, Russian, Ukrainian, Karenni, Somali, Dinka, Nuer, Nepali, Burmese--and many more.
If you speak another language not listed here, we would love to hear from you.

Who You Are

Comfortable communicating in English and at least one other language Friendly, patient, and culturally sensitive Reliable, professional, and willing to learn Open to working in a diverse, trauma-informed environment
Teaching or mentoring experience is welcome but

not required

--training and materials are provided.

Requirements

Background check for all volunteers DMV record required for driving-related roles Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow ICRI volunteer policies
